How to clean a gold ring?

Gold items tend to tarnish, become stained and dirty over time. We will tell you how to restore your jewelry to its former beauty and do it quickly and effectively in our article.

Ways to clean a gold ring

How to clean a gold ring? There are three main methods for restoring gold items:

Soak, helps with various contaminants. It involves using hot (or boiled) water and adding a certain composition to it (salt, detergent, etc.)

Mechanical (not hard) cleaning, used if the previous option did not help.

Polishing returns the product to its ideal shine.

REFERENCE. After all the manipulations, wash and dry the product.

Depending on the complexity of the dirt and plaque, you can try the most effective methods.

  • Detergent (washing powder, no additives) and hot water. The accessory is immersed in the resulting solution for about an hour and a half. The dirt gets wet and is removed with a sponge or other soft tools.
  • Ammonia helps remove not only dirt, but also the resulting oxide films. Its required concentration is 25%. We fill the container with it and place the product for several hours or until the morning.
  • In difficult cases, one of the mixture options will help. Take Vaseline (or vegetable oil) and chalk powder (corundum). Beat until thick sour cream and apply to a soft cloth, carefully wipe the product. At the end, remove the remaining composition and additionally treat with strong alcohol, which will remove all fat.

The methods used depend on the type of noble metal.

Cleaning a gold ringWhite gold (may have additives of silver, palladium, nickel) cleaned using the most gentle methods. The difficulty of the work lies in the thin rhodium plating, which is subject to abrasion. Yellowing of the metal is the first sign of damage to the top layer; this problem cannot be solved at home. Any blackening that occurs can be removed by polishing and using the following methods:

  • ammonia mixed with water 1:1,
  • baking soda, take 1 tbsp. spoon into a glass of boiled water, place the product for about 15 minutes.

Matte gold sensitive to abrasives and toothpaste. It is cleaned, limited to removing visible plaque using a 25% ammonia solution. Another way:

  • Unslaked lime, 2 teaspoons, dissolves in a small amount of water. Add salt and soda in the same proportion. Leave the composition for 3 days, then place the gold in for about 2 hours.

ON A NOTE. To keep gold jewelry in perfect condition for as long as possible, avoid contact with sunlight and exposure to moisture, remove jewelry before cleaning, treating nails, or taking a bath.Accessories that we wear regularly are recommended to be cleaned once a month. Check the surface cleanliness of items stored in boxes and boxes once every six months.

How to polish a gold ring at home

There are several simple ways to restore your jewelry to its original shine.

For smooth surfaces (without patterns or engravings):Polishing the ring

  • We select a piece of material without hard pile (velvet or felt) and sand the product, achieving the desired result. This option is suitable for new jewelry.
  • Place the accessory in a soap solution for 2–3 hours, and then wipe it dry with a soft material (suede). You can use diluted baby shampoo as a base.
  • We restore shine with toothpaste (regular, without additives), apply it with a brush with soft bristles.

IMPORTANT. When cleaning white gold using this method, the brush is replaced with a soft cloth.

  • Three onions are grated and the resulting juice is applied to a cloth. Rub the problem areas of the jewelry. Or just use half an onion. This method will not only restore shine, but also get rid of dark spots and dirt.
  • Water is poured into the container and a little washing powder is added. Bring the liquid to a boil and lower the ring to the bottom. Continue boiling for 15 minutes.
  • To process relief products, take three tablespoons of ammonia, add it to a glass of hot water, immerse the accessory and leave to soak.

In addition to these, there are general methods, regardless of the surface structure:

  • We use an eraser (soft only), which additionally removes light deposits on the product.
  • We soak a cloth napkin in vinegar and carefully process the gold.
  • Colorless lipstick is applied to a soft material, then carefully wipe the tarnished areas of the jewelry.
  • Mix a small amount of beer with egg white, soak a cloth in the mixture and treat the surface.
  • In a glass of water, dilute 2 teaspoons of sugar, immerse the jewelry and leave for up to 2 hours.
  • To achieve the best result, several options can be applied sequentially.

ATTENTION. At the end of any procedure, be sure to rinse and dry the products.

How to properly clean a gold ring with a stone

The appropriate method depends on the sensitivity of the mineral. Thus, soda, tooth powder or salt are not used for malachite, opal and turquoise. Hot solution can damage topaz, garnet and ruby.

IMPORTANT. Rings with a glued stone should not be immersed in boiling water.

There are universal cleaning methods:

  • As a base, take a liquid containing alcohol (lotion, cologne or 40% alcohol), and moisten a cotton swab in it. We carefully wipe the surface, removing plaque and dirt.
  • Use gasoline and a toothbrush (necessarily with soft bristles). This option is optimal for processing narrow and hard-to-reach places.
  • Separate recommendations.
  • Pearls can be cleaned well with soapy water. For the best effect, take filtered water and high-quality soap.
  • Hard minerals (diamond, beryl, topaz, etc.) are compatible with all cleaning products.

IMPORTANT. Upon completion of the process, do not forget to rinse the ring thoroughly and leave to dry.

We hope that our tips helped you solve the problem and return your ring to its former shine and brightness.
