There are few women who are indifferent to jewelry. If they have the financial means, some acquire entire collections. However, the unusual varieties listed below can hardly be called traditional and widespread. And some people have never even heard of.
Chatelain
The word of French origin was originally the name of a practical household item. This accessory was a chain with a clip, which was worn on the belt and served as a device for fixing various objects: keys, notebooks, watches, etc. Depending on the type of activity, other things were also attached to the chatelaine. For example, a tailor carried sewing supplies, and a nurse carried medical supplies and bottles of medicine.
Women's dress of the 18th–19th centuries did not have pockets. There were no bags at that time, so all accessories, the so-called essentials, had to be carried on the belt.
Gradually, the practical product was modified, and by the beginning of the 18th century, the chatelaine became an independent decoration. It was fixed to the outfit using a special clip.
Gold and silver began to be used to make accessories, decorated with precious stones and engraving. Aristocrats used it as fashionable, stylish and functional decoration. Everyday and evening options appeared - handkerchiefs or bottles of perfume were attached to them.
Over time, the chatelaine was modernized into a brooch. Nowadays, this is an exquisite vintage decoration that attracts attention with its unusual appearance and surprises with its history.
Slave bracelets
This is a bracelet that is connected to a ring using one or more chains. The decoration has an original and stylish appearance. It is not as common as regular bracelets. However, you can still find it in the assortment of modern stores (unlike the brooch mentioned above).
According to one version, the prototype of the decoration is the shackles with which slaves were shackled. It was this assumption that gave the product its name. The word slave in translation means “slave”.
By the way, another version can serve as an explanation for the “slave” name. The ring attached to the bracelet appears to be in a “subordinate state.”
However, the accessory also has another name - hatphool. It is more romantic, because the translation of this word from Hindi means “hand flowers”. The decoration was and continues to be worn by Indian brides.
Initially, five rings associated with a bracelet symbolized the divine feminine essence. Subsequently, the number was reduced to three, which means the consolidation of marital relations.
Sautoir or rope
The jewelry was worn by high society fashionistas of the distant 20s of the last century at social events. It is an elongated neck accessory made of several necklaces or threads with stringed beads.
Translated from French “porter en sautoire» means "to be carried over the shoulder or on the back." The sautoir can be seen in famous photographs of the inimitable Mademoiselle Coco, as well as today in the collections of famous fashion designers or on some actresses walking the red carpet.
Two finger ring
Worn on the upper and middle or upper and lower phalanx. It consists of two rings connected by a chain. As a rule, the jewelry is worn on the index and middle fingers.
Such accessories first appeared in Ancient Egypt, and were subsequently popular during the Renaissance and the heyday of punk rock, but in a more brutal design. And once again acquiring a feminine appearance, they became relevant in the 2000s.
Lariat
This is a long transformable decoration, the birthplace of which is Türkiye. There it was a talisman and was worn exclusively by men. Translated from English it means “lasso” or “lasso” - a rope with a loop.
Subsequently, the lariat was transformed into women's jewelry. This is a necklace (120–180 cm) with unconnected ends. The latter can be decorated with tassels, pendants or beads. It is usually worn tied in a knot. The classic way is to fold it in half and pass the two ends into a loop on the chest.
The uniqueness and versatility of double jewelry is that they can be worn separately or combined into one design. It is permissible to attach it in different places - on the collar of a blouse or at the neckline of a dress, on the lapel of a jacket, belt, pockets. You can decorate a fabric handbag or scarf with them.
