Oriental dance is an entire art that requires adherence to many details. In addition to learning the dance movements, special attention should be paid to the costume. The cost of such a costume is quite high, so many dancers are interested in sewing it with their own hands.
The main elements of the look are the bodice, the skirt and the embroidered elastic belt that is attached to it. The belt is a very important part of the costume, since, firstly, it serves as a corset, and secondly, it plays the role of visually enlarging the hips and the amplitude of their movement. This element emphasizes the overall beauty and sexuality of the image.
Important properties of this part of the suit are strength and rigidity. However, avoid putting excessive pressure on your stomach (you still have to dance with it). To attach to the skirt, use buttons, Velcro or thread.
IMPORTANT! When sewing, be guided by the fact that the belt should not slip onto the stomach. It should be securely attached to the skirt.
The shape of the element in question varies from regular stripes to patterned cutouts.
Most of the manufacturing time is spent decorating the belt. Here it is at your own discretion. For this use:
- beads;
- beads;
- sequins;
- glass bead fringe;
- monists;
- coins (yes, they are the ones that create that very ringing sound associated with oriental dance).
One thing is clear - the more decorations on the element, the more spectacular and spectacular the image will be, but it’s still worth knowing the limit. An excessive amount will make the belt heavy and interfere with the quality of the dance.
The color should be chosen to suit your taste. Some dancers prefer a loincloth in a shade of the bodice and skirt, while others choose a color that strongly contrasts with the main elements of the costume.
Belt shapes can be presented as:
- circle or semicircle;
- triangle;
- rectangle.
The fabric needs to be light and comfortable. The most common choice for dancers is chiffon. It fits perfectly on the hips and does not interfere with dance movements. Thanks to the soft shine of velvet, this fabric is also often used when sewing the considered element of the costume. Popular fabrics are satin, organza and stretch.
Patterns of belts for oriental dances
Before cutting out, you should make a blank. The preparation is carried out as follows.
We measure the volume of the hips. For example, let's take the number 66 cm. Divide this number by 2. In our example, we get the result 33 cm. Now you need to draw two lines parallel to each other on paper. The distance between them is the width of the future belt. Choose the width at your discretion. In this example, the width is the same along the entire length; the shape can be changed if desired.
On each line we mark the middle. From the top mark we measure 2 cm down.Connect with the edges of the top line. We round off the resulting lines. We perform similar actions with the lower point.
Since the belt should fit around the hips, it should be made round. We extend the lower lines, as indicated by the dotted line in the figure. At the bottom we make an indent of 2.5 cm and connect the mark with the top line. We repeat the same steps on the second half of the workpiece. At this stage, fitting of the paper blank is required. If the bottom edge is puffy, we reduce the indentation, and if the top edge is, we increase it.
IMPORTANT! If there are supposed to be fasteners on both sides, then we duplicate the pattern. We leave space on both sides for fasteners. If there is a fastener on only one side, you just need to leave some extra fabric for the gap.
So, the pattern is ready.
How to sew a belt for oriental dances with your own hands.
We offer a simplified version of sewing a belt.
We will need:
- Dublerin (you should choose the most rigid one);
- Fabric on the front side;
- Thick cotton.
We lay out the paper pattern on the double sheet. The pattern will be needed twice, because the belt is double. Remember that you need to leave room for fasteners.
We trace the pattern and cut according to the drawing. Then, with the adhesive side, we apply the dublerin onto the main fabric. Afterwards ironing is required. The next step is to trim the fabric along the contour, leaving a margin of 2 cm along the edge. Carefully turn the edge under and sew it with stitches.
And the last stage is decorating the belt. Let's show it using a flower as an example.
We cut out its shape, outline it, and trim it. We embroider each flower with beads and sequins (or other decorations of your choice). We sew flowers to the belt. If desired, add hangings and fill the empty space with sequins.
We looked at the main stages of making a simple but beautiful belt.We hope that our article helped you understand the issue of making this element of the costume. Let's turn on creative thinking and get to work!
