The image loses its appeal when there is a darkened gold chain around the neck. She attracts attention with her untidy appearance, no longer shines and does not add gloss to the image. On the contrary, it only spoils it.
But it’s not all that scary, and you don’t need to take your gold to a salon or buy a special cleaning product. Primitive home remedies will cope with cleaning a gold chain. You can prepare them from what almost everyone has in the house, and they are even easier to use.
How to clean a gold chain
Gold itself does not react with the environment and most chemical compounds. But it is so soft that scratches and dents easily remain on the products. To add rigidity, other metals are added to it. As a result, gold becomes stronger, but for the same reason, over time it darkens and tarnishes. These are the faults of impurities that are not so resistant to external factors, improper storage and frequent use of jewelry.
There are several ways to clean a gold chain:
- buy a special cleaning agent for gold – foam or liquid;
- take it to a jewelry workshop, where they will clean it with ultrasound;
- clean using the traditional method at home.
With the first 2, everything is very clear - you need to go to a workshop or store and pay money. But if you don’t want to go or pay, improvised means come to the rescue. Our mothers and grandmothers used them for years. Therefore, there is no doubt about their effectiveness and safety.
IMPORTANT! The peculiarity of the chain is that it has many small links connected to each other. Dirt accumulates at the joints, so wiping with a cloth will not help. At the same time, harsh and inaccurate cleaning leads to the chain being scratched or torn.
Cleaning with soda
Baking soda will help with severe contamination if you boil the chain. Pour water into the enamel bowl until the gold is completely covered. Place the decoration there and put it on fire. When the water is hot, add 2 tablespoons of baking soda and bring to a boil. When the water boils, add 1-2 drops of detergent or soap and boil for 2-3 minutes.
After this procedure, all dirt will be removed from the decoration.
Toothpaste or powder
For a long time, toothpaste has been used not only for cleaning teeth. It is also useful for gold. Apply a little paste to the chain and brush with a very soft brush. Then rinse the jewelry well.
If you clean any gold jewelry regularly using this method, it will always shine and be pleasing to the eye. Instead of paste, you can dilute the tooth powder with water to a paste and brush with a soft brush.
IMPORTANT! The paste is suitable without abrasive, and use a very soft brush with fine bristles. The Chinese often make these to clean their teeth. If you use a hard brush or paste with large abrasive particles, you will doom your gold jewelry to microdamage and scratches.
Soap solution
Liquid or bar soap is suitable, but the bar will have to be grated or scraped with a knife. Dissolve the soap in a small amount of water to create a saturated soap solution. Place the chain there and leave for half an hour. Shake the liquid periodically. Afterwards, rinse the jewelry and leave to dry on a napkin. Once the jewelry is dry, wipe it with a soft cloth to remove any soap marks.
ADVICE! Soap can be replaced with washing powder or dishwashing gel.
Ammonia + peroxide + powder + water
The product is known as toothpaste. Mix the ingredients in the following proportions:
- ammonia – 1 teaspoon;
- hydrogen peroxide – 1-2 teaspoons;
- washing powder – 0.5-1 teaspoon;
- warm water – 100-150 milliliters.
Place the decoration in the resulting solution and leave for 30-40 minutes, shaking occasionally. Then take out the gold and wash it. The chemical reaction will clean the jewelry no worse than ultrasound.
Other options
The most popular methods are described above, but there are several more options for home remedies for cleaning a gold chain:
- mix 50-100 ml of warm water and a teaspoon each of boric acid, ammonia and hydrogen peroxide. Add 0.5 teaspoon of liquid soap or dishwashing detergent, stir until all ingredients are completely dissolved. Dip the chain into the solution and wait 25-30 minutes. Stir the chain from time to time with a wooden stick so that the dirt comes off completely. Rinse in clean water and dry with a paper towel or soft cloth;
IMPORTANT! It is better to take a chain with twisted links to a workshop for ultrasonic cleaning.
- make a paste of salt and lemon juice, you can also use orange juice. Clean the chain with this mixture for 3-4 minutes. Then rinse and dry;
- mix 2 tablespoons of ammonia with 1 teaspoon of soda. Place the chain there and cover the container with film. Leave for 24 hours. Then rinse it, dry it and rub it with oil;
- Cover the bottom of a glass or ceramic container with foil. Separately, mix baking soda, salt and liquid dishwashing detergent. Pour half of the mixture onto foil, place the chain on top and cover it with the second part of the mixture. Fill everything with hot water and leave until it cools completely. Then rinse and dry as usual.
