What is the difference between a bra and a bra?

Many girls are quite sure that the concepts of “bra” and “bra” are absolute synonyms and use this word to refer to the same item of a woman’s wardrobe. However, these words differ from each other and mean things that are similar in appearance. But all different models of underwear for ladies. What is the difference between them?

The meaning of the word "bra"

bustBra is the common name for a bra.. The word comes from the word "bodice", which means the upper part of the dress that covers the chest and back. The word comes from the Dutch lijf, meaning "hull".

This concept includes the fabric that supports and hides the breasts. However, not every bra can be designated by this common name. Conventionally, this is the name for a sleeveless top designed to hide the upper part of a woman’s body.

Important! Bra is a broad concept. It is used to designate items of both women's and children's wardrobe.

Definition of “bra”

brassiereThis term comes from the German language by combining two words “buste”, which means “breast”, and “halter”, which translates as “to support”. Literally translated, this means a piece of underwear that supports the breasts.

A couple of centuries ago it did not have as many varieties as it is now presented in lingerie salons. At that time it was just a wide, thick band that pulled the chest in.

Today on the shelves you can find a huge number of varieties of bras:

  • seamless models (to maintain a tight-fitting outfit);
  • “invisible” (products that are attached only to the chest, without covering the back);
  • products with removable straps (designed for revealing clothing with bare shoulders).

Important! Today, designers offer even the most unusual options with dubious functionality. For example, in stores you can find musical or self-inflating products, as well as bras with a built-in device for measuring blood pressure and heart rate.

How are they different?

types of bustsIf we compare these two concepts, then bra is a “broader” word. Which can mean not only a piece of women’s clothing, but also a short children’s T-shirt or a special vest for carrying ammunition for military men. They also use the word “bra” in their slang. Dressmakers call the top of a dress a bodice, and some combinations on which stockings are attached also fit this definition.

A bra is a more narrowly focused concept. It only means a piece of women's underwear and nothing else. There are many varieties of them, but this does not change the purpose of this thing.
