A raincoat is an indispensable item in changeable weather. Its value lies in its compactness and reliability. While precipitation is only expected in the weather forecast, the raincoat will be in your bag or backpack without taking up much space.
However, at the first drops the cloak can be taken out. It will keep your clothes dry and protect not only from moisture, but also from wind. In this case, such a thing is even more reliable than an umbrella, which is not easy to hold in your hands in gusts of wind.
It's good when each family member has their own capes. You don’t have to buy them, because you can make such a raincoat yourself. We will tell you how to sew a raincoat with your own hands.
Materials and tools for work
Since we will be making a functional and practical item, it is important to use a material that does not allow water to pass through. The easiest way to do the work is from polyethylene.
Let's prepare the following for work.
- Polyethylene – 2 m.
- Bias binding for processing.
- Reversible plastic clasps and clear buttons.
- Measuring tape, ruler.
- Felt pen or ballpoint (gel) pen.
- Scissors.
- Sewing machine.
How to sew your own raincoat
Traditionally raincoats are sewn in the form of a kimono or poncho. A mandatory element of the cape is the hood. Let's consider both options.
Raincoat-kimono
The kimono style is convenient due to its cut.
Reference. The sleeve of such models is not cut separately, but is one-piece.
This means that the number of connecting seams is reduced and the whole process is simplified.
Cloak
- Cut out a rectangle from polyethylene. Its dimensions are 1.8 m in length, 1.5 m in width.
- Fold it in half widthwise, we get 1.8 m by 0.75 m.
- Now let's roll it up lengthwise. As a result, our rectangle acquired dimensions of 0.9 m by 0.75 m. This is half the front and back of the cloak with a fold.
- We measure 40 cm along the bottom edge from the fold and draw a 40 cm segment upward parallel to the fold. Let's put an end to it.
- From the upper corner opposite the fold, measure 30 cm. From this point at a right angle, measure 25 cm and place a second point.
- We connect the points with a concave line, outline the side and sleeve.
- We make a semicircle for the neck and cut out the details.
- We have the front and back of the raincoat. For ease of use, we divide the front part into left and right shelves.
- Fold the side of the back and one of the shelves, cover with bias tape and stitch.
- We do the same with the second side seam.
Hood
- From the remaining polyethylene we cut out 2 squares with a side of 0.4 m.
- We make the upper corners semicircular.
- Sew together the right and left sides of the hood using bias tape.
- We also attach the bottom of the part to the neck.
- We use trim around the edges of the shelves and the bottom of the cape.
- Sew on the fasteners.
Advice: To make the plastic fasteners hold better, sew transparent buttons to them from the inside out.
Your raincoat is ready!
Raincoat-poncho
A characteristic detail of the poncho is the absence of sleeves. The cape covers both the torso and arms at once. Sewing it is even easier.
- Cut out 2 squares, their diagonal will become the length of your raincoat.
- Place the squares on top of each other and make a cutout for the neckline on one of the corners.
- Just like for a kimono, we make a hood.
In this form, the poncho must be worn over the head. But It’s better to make shelves and a clasp. You can also use a zipper of a suitable length for it. We sew together all the details and process the cuts using binding. The work is done.
As you can see, the work of making a raincoat does not require any special material or time costs. But you will feel the benefits of the completed product more than once! The acquired skill will help you out when you again discover that the old raincoat has become too small for the child.
Even in this case, the rain will not take you by surprise because you will always have a raincoat with you, made by yourself.
