Flounces as decoration for dresses appeared in the 18th century and have never gone out of fashion since then. The use of flounces makes a woman more romantic, flirtatious, special and airy.

But it is worth considering that frills add some volume and the selection of the style of the future dress should be made in accordance with your body type.

If you have wide shoulders and narrow hips, then a frill on the shoulders is not recommended for you, as it will visually make them even wider. But the frill at the bottom, on the contrary, will balance the figure and make it more harmonious.

If on the contrary - wide hips and narrow shoulders - a flounce on the shoulders would be ideal.

Short women should use ruffles only on short dresses. And for tall people, all lengths are good.

How to sew a dress with frills

First of all, let's decide on the fabric. Thin materials that fall beautifully in waves are suitable for this purpose. It can be chiffon, satin fabric, silk and lace are perfect.In short dresses it is cotton fabric or chintz.

Sewing a dress with a flounce is not difficult. What is a shuttlecock? This is a strip of fabric draped on the dress in various places.

You just need to decide where you want to sew it: on the shoulders or along the bottom of the dress. Let's consider both options.

You can sew a dress with a flounce on the shoulders with your own hands in one evening. It is sewn very simply.

How to sew a dress with a flounce on the shoulders:

  • We take measurements. The fewer measurements, the simpler the pattern.

We need the length of the product. Our dress model has no shoulders, the dress is held on the chest. From this we will measure the length.

The length of the shuttlecock will be equal to the circumference of the shoulders.

We set the width of the dress along the V of the chest.

    • To pattern a size 48 model with allowances, cut out 4 rectangles (two dress parts 66x90 cm) and two flounce parts (132x32 cm);
    • We sew the details of the dress on the sides, and leave 25 cm pieces unstitched on top. These will be the armholes of the product;
    • Sew the shuttlecock;
    • Using pins we connect the middle of the dress with the flounce. Let's compose;
    • We fold the top of the dress and stitch it, leaving a 1.5 cm hole for threading the elastic;
    • We thread the elastic band through the underwear, stitch the ends together and sew up the hole;
    • We trim the bottom line of the shuttlecock;
  • We sew a belt and our dress is ready!

How to sew a dress with a flounce at the bottom

There are several ways to create a frill at the bottom of the dress.

Circular look - when beautiful waves are obtained due to the cut in the shape of a “donut” (circle). In this case, the radius inside (R1) is calculated as the length of the part divided by 3.14x2 (3.14 is the number Pi), and the radius of the circle outside (R2) as R1 + width of the element.

Such a frill is sewn with the inner part to the skirt of the dress and, due to the width of the outer part, creates a flounce effect.

In a spiral - this cutting method is somewhat more difficult to construct. You need to draw two intersecting lines in the shape of a cross and, as on a coordinate system, make notches in accordance with the width of the frill. We draw a spiral on it, cut it out, stitch it and sew it to the base.

In the shape of a flat strip - cut out a strip of material of the required width and assemble it in a certain way:

  1. Mark the middle of the shuttlecock by folding it in half;
  2. We sew along the long side twice, leaving the ends of the threads on both sides;
  3. We begin to pull the remaining edges of the threads, creating a shuttlecock. We straighten it evenly, match it with the bottom of the dress and adjust the width;
  4. We attach the shuttlecock to our product and make two folds along the bottom.

As you can see, sewing a dress with ruffles with your own hands is a very real task. If you have the desire, everything will work out.
