Puma brand icon

PUMA is one of the oldest manufacturers of sports shoes, clothing, accessories and other training equipment. The brand appeared after a quarrel between two brothers who founded the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory in 1924. Alas, the manufactory did not last long and collapsed after the Second World War. Then one of the brothers, Adolf, founded Adidas, and the other, Rudolf, founded Ruda.

During its existence, “RuDa” changed not only its name, renaming itself to the familiar PUMA, but also its emblem.

Who invented the Puma badge, how and when did it appear?

The famous jumping beast logo was created by the founder of the German brand, Rudolf Dassler. This happened after a quarrel with his brother, as a result of which each of them received his own part of the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory.

The choice of this particular fauna representative is not accidental. The owner of the manufactory believed that the clothes and equipment produced by the company should evoke associations with the character of a graceful predator: flexibility, dexterity, speed, endurance.Rudolph was convinced that these traits are inherent in all people who are interested in sports. And clothing and other accessories from the PUMA brand will help them achieve their goals.

The initial version, written by Rudolf Dassler, turned out to be not particularly solid. The sketchy sketch did not inspire confidence and did not have an attractive and presentable appearance. Therefore, the company management decided to use the services of a professional. The choice fell on Lutz Backes, a famous German artist and designer at that time. It was he who came up with the emblem, which later became recognizable in every corner of the globe.

How the PUMA logo changed

The history of the brand goes back decades. Over almost a century, the factory changed not only its main direction many times. The Puma logo was also rebranded.

1948 The first sketch was born. It represented the silhouette of a running predator and the letter “D”, representing the first letter of the owner’s last name. The representative of the cat family jumped through the letter as if through a hoop.

1951 Changes were made to the sketch - images of a predator and the letter “D” were placed inside a multifaceted figure, similar in outline to a diamond. Moreover, the wild cat and the letter were made in white, and the background was in black.

1958 The logo became white with a more elongated shape. On the sides there are inscriptions: “Rudolf”, “Dassler”, “Schuhfabrik”.

1968 There was a significant change to the emblem - all elements were removed except the running puma. There is no high-quality image of the logo of the 1968 version preserved, so only a general impression can be made of it.

1970 As on the 1968 version, the logo is a cat, but in white with a clear black border. The predator is depicted during a jump.

1974 The inscription PUMA is added to the picture of a representative of the cat family. It is located to the left of the image of the puma.

1976 The wildcat was removed, leaving only the letters PUMA in a thin, slanted font. Below them is a silhouette reminiscent of a sports equipment - a treadmill.

1979 The cat emblem is back. It looks the same as on the 1970 trademark, but the color has changed to black. In the same year, the second version was presented - a silhouette of a puma with a white edging of a paw jumping over the PUMA inscription.

1980 A miniature image with the trademark inscription has been added to the logo.

1982 The silhouette of the predator becomes smaller, and thin white lines appear on the name, representing a treadmill.

1999 The logo takes on a familiar appearance - the small white stripes have been removed, and the inscription “puma.com” has been placed under the brand name.

2003 The emblem becomes multi-colored - the silhouette of a puma and the name are placed on a red background, and “puma.com” disappears. This is the version the brand currently uses.

The PUMA logo is more than an image of a jumping feline. It acts as a kind of hymn to the unlimited possibilities and talent of every person, while at the same time being synonymous with excellent European quality.
