Every needlewoman has a considerable number of useful devices in her arsenal. Thus, one of the most famous and widespread lifesaver accessories is the safety pin. But for some reason its name has not yet managed to be imprinted in the memory of absolutely all people. Many, it turns out, don’t even know what it is or what it looks like. If you are one of the “uninitiated,” you can eliminate your lack of knowledge with the help of our educational program.
Safety pin and everything about it
Few people are aware that this device also has a second name, which sounds like “safe”. Indeed, you can only get injured by it during use on purpose. By its design, a safety pin is a pointed needle, the tip of which is hidden under the cap with the help of a spring, which facilitates the process of unfastening and fastening. The presence of such a part allows the pin to be used both as a fastener to hold something and for piercing something.
Today, the main tasks of a safety pin include assistance in needlework.It can greatly facilitate the process of basting parts knitted from yarn or cut from fabric. In addition, it is used to create brooches, badges, and even as an independent (often jewelry) decoration.
History of creation
Fasteners vaguely reminiscent of today's safety pin have been used by people since time immemorial. However, the year in which it appeared is “officially” considered to be 1849. To be more precise, 04/10/1849.
On this day, the relevant US service registered a patent for the production of “pins” for dresses. The owner of the patent was Walter Hunt, an American who managed to twist such a useful device from a piece of metal wire.
The question remains: why is the pin called a safety pin if the patent was issued in the USA? This is because the inventor did not particularly care about maintaining his own copyrights. Six months later, a similar device was successfully patented in the UK and widely advertised around the world. Since Hunt did not take any action, the pin remained “English” for everyone.
Usage
You can see what a modern safety pin looks like in the photo. But we will write separately about how and where to actually use it, in addition to fastening fabrics. Today this little thing is often used as:
- amulet against damage and the evil eye;
- detail of jewelry, costume jewelry;
- independent decoration in the form of a brooch, earrings;
- piercing;
- decorative element for wardrobe and interior items;
- material for creating clothing and accessories.
Of course, a top made from safety pins is not entirely suitable for everyday wear, but earrings or a necklace are quite worthy of attention. Even if you are not a fan of unusual uses, still buy several of these irreplaceable helpers.Carry them with you in your bag and know that they will help you avoid minor embarrassments with clothes and sometimes shoes.
