Cut out pockets in the side seams
If you bought, for example, material for a skirt but there is clearly not enough fabric for the pockets, don’t worry. Take an inexpensive one chintz or calico - they are perfect for this purpose.
In addition, you do not need to pore over creating a pattern for the “bag”:
- trace your own palm and cut out a pattern along its contour;
- place the resulting sample on the fabric and draw its boundaries with chalk;
- open four of these parts (for a coat, each pocket should be made of two layers of fabric - main and lining);
- Process the edges of the parts using an overlocker;
- mark the location of the inlet hole on the product;
- Place similar marks on the finished elements of the pocket cut “from the face”;
- place the cut of the “bag” on the front side of the product fabric exactly according to the marks;
- pin with safety pins or baste with regular thread;
- carry out a check inspection of the “bag” - the correct position is when the hand lowered into the pocket comes into contact with the base.
Step-by-step instructions: how to sew a pocket into a side seam
If you used fabric of excellent texture for its pattern, then sew strips of the main material five centimeters wide to disguise the visible part. This needs to be done only on two parts of the “bag”, which will be sewn to the back panel of the finished product.
Algorithm for sewing a skirt:
- On the shelf of the front part of the item, place the parts of the “bag” that do not have a valance with the front side, measuring 9 cm from the waist along the seam on the side.
- Sew the pocket with a machine seam, leaving about one centimeter for the allowance along the side edges.
- Do the same operations with the back edge of the skirt, attaching the “bag” parts with a valance.
- Fold the cut of the “bag” to the left seam allowance.
- Iron well.
- Sew each detail and seam allowance so that the pocket does not “stick out” from the side seam.
- Fold the front and back edges of the product “facing” each other.
- Pin together, not missing the details of the left and right “bags”.
- Sew the side seam on the machine, retreating to the width of the previously specified allowance. Leave the entrance hole to the pocket free!
- Iron the finished pockets on the front of the skirt.
- Finish the edges of the side seams with an overlocker or use bias tape. This treatment is considered luxury. It is used in fashionable design houses. The combination of striped fabric and checkered braid looks especially original.
