A zipper is a special type of fastener that can be used to quickly connect clothing items together. There are many product options that differ in structure, materials and other parameters. This article discusses their main varieties.
Design by type
The zipper consists of two textile tapes, on which links made of plastic or iron are fastened in a checkerboard pattern. Fixation of the halves is carried out using a lock moving along the tapes.
Tractor
The fastener is named so because in appearance it resembles a tractor caterpillar. It consists of single plastic teeth attached to a band. The teeth can have different shapes, but the “mushroom” shape is especially popular. A special groove ensures reliable grip. This type of fastener is often used for sewing outerwear, backpacks and sports bags.
Important! The tractor zipper is highly practical and wear-resistant.
Spiral
The spiral (twisted) type of fastener is made from a special synthetic fiber wrapped in a spiral. The material can be either wrapped around a ribbon or sewn to it. The fiber must have projections that engage with the projections on the opposite part. The color of the spiral is usually identical to the color of the ribbon and looks like metal. Due to their low weight, such products are often used in light industry.
Metal
In terms of ease of use, a metal zipper is similar to a tractor zipper. However, the teeth in such models are usually made of brass, nickel, aluminum and other materials. Metal fittings have metal teeth, a lock connection and a lock tab. The workpiece is an ordinary flat wire. The products usually have teeth of an asymmetrical configuration. On one side, the clove has a protruding part, and on the other, a depression.
Metal products are used for sewing products made from dense fabrics and natural or artificial leather. They are durable and wear-resistant. However, cheaper options can jam, get stuck, and scratch your hands.
IMPORTANT! In the manufacture of metal zippers, alloys of various metals are used: ancient silver, gold, bronze and modern high-tech finishes.
Secret
Concealed zippers provide a special design because the teeth in them are located on the inside and have a finer pitch. The use of hidden zippers allows you to hide the selected option for fastening parts. The teeth of such products are hidden behind the braid and, with skillful tailoring, are almost invisible, which makes the clothes more neat and stylish. The product is used for making skirts, blouses, shirts, and also as curtain accessories. This type can be divided into the following groups:
- Lightweight type on a nylon or cotton base. Most sewing departments sell these.
- Detachable and non-detachable from compacted synthetic material.
- Decorative on a satin base.
- Increased strength on a dense synthetic base.
It should be noted that all hidden fasteners of the one-piece type look the same: they have identical shapes of the spirals of the teeth, the lock and its handle. One-piece products of this type differ only in length and slightly in the width of the braid and fastener.
REFERENCE! Concealed zippers are produced in a wide range of colors, which makes them even more invisible on products.
Zippers are used for sewing almost all types of clothing: jackets, trousers, dresses, skirts, as well as other textile products. Popular types include tractor, metal, spiral and hidden zippers.
