Welt pocket with zipper
Before doing the work, you need to decide where the part will be. Based on this, we prepare the material.
What you will need
To make a welt pocket with a zipper, you will need the following.
- Metal zipper 15–18 cm.
- A piece of fabric for facing.
- Lining fabric.
How to make a pocket
The work is performed on the front side of the product, we determine the location.
- Measure the length of the cut on the fabric. Draw a straight line, marking the beginning and end with transverse lines. Let's look at an example for a pocket on a bag with a length of 18 cm.
- The facing flap is 3 cm longer than the part, width 4.5–5.5 cm.
- We apply a facing to the front side of the fabric and secure it with pins.
- On the facing we mark the pocket line and make a frame. Its width depends on the width of the zipper.
- Connect the lines. The result is a rectangular frame. Machine stitch along the resulting lines.
- We make a hole along the center line, cut it without cutting to the edges by about 1–1.5 cm. We make notches in the corners of the frame. We work carefully so as not to touch the stitching.
- Turn the facing inside out so that the facing is not visible. Secure with pins and sew by hand.
- Iron the resulting frame.
How to sew a zipper
The next stage of work is attaching the zipper to the product.
Important! Choose a fastener so that the zipper is longer than the frame.
- Place the fastener under the bottom fabric from the wrong side and baste.
- Using a sewing machine, sew a stitch along the edge of the frame, retreating 2–3 mm from the edge.
How to sew burlap
- From the lining fabric, cut two rectangular flaps equal to the width of the facing, length as desired.
- Baste the burlap to the zipper facing and stitch.
- Perform the same steps with the second flap.
Important! The stitching is laid as close to the edge of the facing as possible.
- Point the burlap down and stitch the side and bottom edges of the fabric.
Set-in pocket with zipper
This option is made according to the slotted principle, but with a set-in leaf.
Materials and tools
To work you will need lightning, choose the length as desired. On its basis, a frame for the leaf is prepared. The length of the fastener is 17 cm, the width of the leaf is 3 cm, the length is 17 plus 0.5 cm at the edges for easy stitching.
Making leaves
Draw a frame of leaves on the fabric. To do this, set aside the length and width of the leaf when unfolded. This is 6 cm plus seam allowances of 1.5 cm, top and bottom, 1 cm on the sides. The leaf detail is ready.
Preparing parts
- To hide the lock under the leaf with a cloth, you need to prepare strip of fabric. The width of the fastener is 1.5 cm, and the leaves are 3 cm, which means the strip will be 1.5 cm. Measure the length of the leaf on the fabric, set aside 1.5 cm on both sides of the line, plus seam allowances.
- Prepare burlap. Its width is equal to the length of the part, and the depth can be chosen as desired.
- Cut out the resulting elements.
Important! The burlap parts must be of different lengths, since one part is sewn above the leaf, the second below.
Making a frame
Draw a frame for the pocket on the product detail. Its length will be equal to the length of the finished leaf. Fold the leaf in half and iron it. Place a bend on the center cut line, secure with pins, and sharpen with a machine. Leave 1 cm free edges.
Attention! The seams are ironed after each operation.
Zipper and pocket
- We connect the clasp with the insert. We sew it onto the left side of the lock, folding it with the right sides inward. We sew along the intended lines, not reaching 1 cm along the edges.
- We apply the second side of the part to the frame butt to the leaf. We fix it with pins and sew the seam along the marked lines.
- Attach the smaller piece of burlap to the edge of the zipper sewn to the additional strip. That is The zipper is formed between the strip and the burlap. The second edge is still free.
- We cut the entrance to the pocket. Along the intended cutting line, we make an incision up to the notches in the corners of the frame, without cutting 0.2 mm to the seam.
Shutdown
- Turn the leaf with the burlap through the frame to the wrong side.
- Straighten the seams and secure the pocket opening with pins.
- Attach a piece of paper to the free part of the zipper on one side. On the other - the long part of the burlap part. Make a seam along the marked line.
- Place side seams equal to its width.
Attention! If you make the seams longer, you may end up with wrinkles.
- Place a seam along the edge of the pocket burlap.
The set-in pocket with a zipper leaf is ready. It is easy to perform even for a novice dressmaker.
