A button is a small item made of hard material that is used as a fastener on clothing or as a decorative element on other garments. There is a fairly large classification of fittings, which defines several main varieties.
Types of buttons
Today in fabric and accessories stores you can find a huge number of varieties of buttons. They differ in characteristics, appearance and material of manufacture. They are usually classified according to the following criteria:
- by material of manufacture (galalite, glass, mother-of-pearl, wood and others);
- by size (diameter in millimeters);
- according to their intended purpose (used for different types of clothing, for example, coats, trousers, underwear or uniforms);
- by appearance (many criteria are taken into account here, such as shape, smoothness or relief, color);
- according to the method of fastening (there are several varieties that differ in the number of holes or design.
Important! When sewing and attaching accessories, it is important to use the appropriate type of buttons. For example, when sewing coats, larger sizes and stronger fasteners are used. Buttons are used in a wide range of diameters, from 26 mm, usually with four holes for fastening.
Most often, when talking about types, people imagine a way to attach this button to clothing. There are flat fittings with 2 or 4 holes for sewing, fasteners on the leg, a canadian and a rivet that does not require sewing. To determine their difference, you need to imagine what they look like and study the methods of sewing to clothing.
Flat with holes
This is the most popular type and is used everywhere. They come with two or four holes for sewing. There is also a rarer type of such fittings - with three holes.
Flat buttons can be of different diameters and are intended for different types of clothing. Their differences are noticeable in men's and women's attire. For men, these are more laconic and simple shapes and colors, while accessories for women's clothing are distinguished by sophistication, originality of shapes and a variety of colors.
On a leg or with a loop
A voluminous type of button, which is most often sewn onto items made of thick fabric. They are usually small in size, flat or slightly convex in shape, and have an eyelet on the back for easy sewing to the fabric. Such accessories look great on women's suits and blouses, dresses, skirts and other items. In some cases, such fasteners are used for needlework and applied arts.
Important! Often buttons with loops are covered with the same fabric as the product itself. This gives the image elegance and originality.
Canadian
This is an unusual type of button found on uniforms or sportswear used in difficult conditions. Its peculiarity lies in two parallel oblong holes. They contain a keeper tape (high-strength textile sling), which is subsequently sewn to the clothing with a strong seam.
The fastener itself is able to move freely along the tape on which it is located. This ensures its almost complete invulnerability under shock loads and sudden movements.
Rivet
It is an indispensable contribution to the garment industry. Inconspicuous rivets are used in various types of clothing and are widely used to decorate certain items, such as bags. Rivets are metal clamps that are attached to clothing with a special machine. By connecting, the two sides of the rivet fasten the parts of the textile product together.
Important! When choosing clothes, you need to make sure that the rivets are firmly fixed to the clothes. Otherwise, a dropped clasp can completely ruin the item and make it unwearable.
The variety of buttons presented in ateliers and stores is amazing. A particularly wide selection is noted for women's clothing. You can find fittings that imitate precious stones or metals, and also get richly trimmed clasps on the legs. The imagination of a needlewoman can be almost endless.
