The First World War indirectly started because of buttons. In 1914, on June 28, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was wounded. He was shot by Gavrila Princip, a student from Serbia. The Archduke could have been saved, but the numerous decorations on his clothes prevented him from bandaging the wound in time. As a result, Franz Ferdinand died.
The influence of fashion on history
Previously, such a small thing as buttons was significant. The more of them there were on the uniform, the more respectable the person was. They began to cause trouble even before the First World War. In 1812, during the time of Napoleon, fittings on clothing prevented French soldiers from invading our country. It got very cold and the tin buttons simply crumbled into dust. It was impossible to fight like that.
Now let's return to Ferdinand. The story of his murder is shrouded in darkness. In general, the Archduke did not cause anyone any trouble, but supported the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Serbia. So he became a target for Mlada Bosna.
This association assigned 6 conspirators to eliminate Ferdinand. They settled down near the Milyachka River, where the Archduke and his family were supposed to pass. But something didn't go according to plan. The motorcade arrived at the place at 10:01, high school student Nedelko launched a grenade, but missed. Other conspirators were thwarted by people.
Ferdinand went to the hospital to see the victims of the explosion. By a strange coincidence, on the way he met one of the conspirators - Princip. The latter, without thinking twice, took out a pistol and fired. The married couple died almost instantly. Much effort was made to save Ferdinand, but the unfortunate buttons got in the way.
The murder of Franz became the reason to declare an ultimatum to Serbia. However, the country was supported by Russia, as a result of which the First World War began.
Other interesting facts
In 1844, the New York City police wore uniforms with brass buttons. They sparkled a lot and attracted the attention of others. In English "copper" is copper. Soon this name began to be used for the owners of the uniform, they began to be called cops. This is what police officers are called today. Their shape has also changed little.
The authorship of the buttons is still unknown. They started making them before our era. In Germany in the 13th century. accessories with loops intended for fastening appeared, after which buttons came into use. Interestingly, they were made from glass, which was processed very carefully. As a result, the fittings looked like diamonds.
Upon request, memorial items were also made from the hair of deceased relatives.
Buttons appeared in Rus' in the 6th century. They were called so from the word “scare.” It was believed that such balls, often with filling inside, ward off evil spirits.Whether this is actually true is not known for certain.
So, the role of even such an insignificant detail of clothing, as you see, is very important. Who knows how people's lives would have turned out if buttons had never been invented.
