It is difficult to imagine the modern world without a baseball cap. It protects from the scorching sun no worse than a wide-brimmed hat, but is much more comfortable and practical. Previously, a baseball cap was strictly a men's sports accessory, but today it is considered a universal headdress that can be worn by absolutely everyone.
A baseball cap is a hat (no matter how strange this fact may sound), but with a long hard visor and a high crown (top part). The side and back parts are sometimes sewn from a special mesh. In addition, the baseball cap always has a clasp, thanks to which you can adjust the size of the headgear.
The name of this accessory is telling. The world first saw it in 1849, when the American baseball team New York Knickerbockers showed off their updated equipment. The first baseball cap was made of straw and was intended exclusively for professional play.
A little later (in 1860), another baseball team from the USA - the Brooklyn Excelsiors - played a match wearing a headdress with a round visor. In sports fashion, there was a trend called Brooklyn-style, in which the main thing was a baseball cap with a button on the top and a long round visor. Until the end of the 19th century, the popularity of this accessory grew, and in 1900 the baseball cap became the top seller in the sports headwear market.
In 1903, the visor was slightly modified: now it began to be stitched. In addition, labels and stylish patterns increasingly appeared on baseball caps. However, until the middle of the century, the visor remained soft, and the baseball cap itself looked very much like a standard cap. They began to make it harder in 1940, and already in 1954 the legendary New Era 59Fifty headdress appeared. In the future, it will become the standard for sewing all other models of baseball caps.
Surprisingly, the famous back clasp only appeared in 1980. Until this time, a baseball cap was selected individually, focusing strictly on the size of the head. Manufacturers understood that this was inconvenient, so one day they found a solution to this issue that was simple to the point of genius: they sewed special mechanisms onto two identical caps that allowed a person to independently adjust the size of the headgear. Since then, this small but important detail has become the “calling card” of every baseball cap.
Today, a baseball cap is not only an element of a sports uniform. It is a convenient everyday accessory. Nowadays, many parts of it have changed somewhat. For example, the visor is increasingly straight and wide; today, not only the usual buttons are used as a fastener, but also Velcro or a special buckle fixed on a strip of fabric of the corresponding color.
There are a variety of steels and materials from which this accessory is made. So, if previously cotton and linen were mainly used, today the palm is given to synthetics, which have excellent stretch (this is especially true on sports models), and, if necessary, keep their shape.
In addition, the choice of fabric for a baseball cap is influenced by the season. There are winter models with special inserts to protect the ears from cold and wind. They are made of leather, suede, and the inside is insulated with felt, fleece or fur. Summer models are more familiar to most of us. They are made from mixed fabrics that contain synthetic components, as well as cotton.
