A suede cap and beret look wonderful after purchase, but over time, even with careful wear, greasy areas and dirt appear. To delay washing, use water-repellent treatments and specialized care products. It is better to clean with homemade compounds.
Rules for cleaning suede hats
- The material does not tolerate contact with water well, so washing is resorted to only as a last resort, when no other method of removing stains has worked.. In this case, the hat should initially be dry. If you get caught in the rain, dry your beret or cap first, and only then remove the dirt.
- If you decide to hand wash, stock up on glycerin. Dissolve 2.5 ml in 1 liter of water and rub the headdress with this solution. Wait a few minutes and then proceed with the planned procedure. When rinsing, conditioners should be used.
- Light suede can be cleaned with different home remedies than black suede. Basic methods:
- Mix peroxide with water. Soak a rag with the resulting mixture and rub the stain.
- Add soda and peroxide to milk. Use the same as the previous option.
- Dissolve 7 g of baking soda in 100 ml of milk. Apply the resulting product directly to the problem area, rub with a brush, remove residues and lumps using a vacuum cleaner. Wipe with a damp cloth.
Important! Do not twist the caps, wring them, or intentionally stretch them. Otherwise, it will be extremely difficult for the product to return to its original shape.
What products and tools are needed for cleaning at home?
Tools:
- Rag. A plain rag made from natural material is suitable. Coloreds can shed.
- Vacuum cleaner. Removes dust.
- Towel. Paper and regular.
- Roller for cleaning clothes. Cleans out small debris.
- Brush. Buy a special brush at a hardware store that is designed specifically for suede. Some people replace it with dental or regular clothing, but with natural bristles.
- Sponge. You need to use one that matches the color of the hat. Ideal option: colorless white.
- An eraser.
- Professional suede care products. Only liquid and without chlorine.
Homemade cleaning products. To prepare them you will need:
- colorless vodka or alcohol;
- petrol;
- soda;
- vinegar;
- milk;
- salt;
- starch;
- white bread (for light suede), rye bread (for dark suede).
Important! Caps and berets in bright colors require careful handling. Ideal option: postpone attempts to get rid of dirt yourself and contact a dry cleaner.
How to clean light stains?
Algorithm of actions:
- vacuum and treat with a cleaning roller;
- use a brush to remove any dirt;
- try rubbing the stain with an eraser and removing any flying lumps;
- if this does not help, sprinkle table salt on top of the stain and leave for a while;
- shake the cap so that the salt crumbles;
- Remove the remains with bread crumbs, and then work with a brush.
What to do with difficult stains?
Method 1:
- soak a rag in gasoline;
- rub the problem area;
- pat dry with a towel.
Method 2 (against stubborn stains and shiny areas):
- add ammonia to the water in a ratio of 4:1;
- soak a rag in the solution and treat the stain;
- Dilute 5 ml of vinegar in 200 ml of water;
- treat contaminants with a new product;
- pat dry with paper towels.
Method 3:
- Dissolve 1 part baking soda in 10 parts milk;
- moisten a rag in the mixture;
- wipe the entire surface of the hat with the solution;
- wipe with another wet cloth;
- dry with a towel.
Method 4 (for stubborn dirt):
- mix a teaspoon of starch with 5 ml of ammonia;

- apply the mixture directly to the problem area;
- leave for a few minutes;
- clean off lumps of mush.
How to renew the entire surface of a suede beret?
Steaming will help. Some use professional equipment, others simply hold berets and caps over a pan of boiling water. Regardless of which method was used, at the end of the procedure, smooth the pile with a brush designed for caring for suede products.
Second method: rubbing with orange peels. The method is not suitable for light suede. There will most likely be orange stains on it.
What is the difference between cleaning natural suede and artificial suede?
The key point is the quality of the artificial material. Cheap substitutes have low mechanical strength and are easy to damage. If you start rubbing with a cleaning brush or stretching the hat, the fabric will burst. It will not be possible to restore it. This is a one-time thing.
Normal suede substitute is stronger than natural one. Many products made from it even have permission to hand wash and machine wash. Check the label, use it to determine the cleaning method and test for compatibility of the material with the detergent. It is applied to an inconspicuous area of the headdress, left for 5-10 minutes, and then wiped off with a white rag.
The spots are clearly visible on the white. If the fabric has faded from the product or is very stretched, it is not suitable. Remove any remaining residue with a wet cloth and choose something else.
How to properly wash a suede beret?
Having decided on the cleaning agent, proceed to the preparatory stage: clean the hat from small adhering debris using a brush. The next step depends on what washing method the manufacturer allows. If machine is acceptable, then consider the following rules:
- suede items cannot be washed with items made from other materials;
- liquid detergents are more delicate, so you need to use them;
- a special washing cover will help avoid whitish deposits;
- Bright suede can fade a lot; use special products to preserve the color.
After washing, immediately remove the hat from the drum unless you want it to lose its shape.. Place the beret on a blank, a mannequin, or at least a 3-liter jar and leave it alone until it dries completely.
Important! If after washing the pile stands up or begins to lie in different directions, be sure to comb it using a brush designed for suede.
The manual method is done like this:
- tools are selected (a brush, a colorless rag and a homemade product made from alcohol and water will come in handy);
- the product is applied to the rags;
- rub stains with a rag;
- then apply it with a brush.
Next, they move on to the treatment of persistent contaminants. You should act based on the type of stain. Fatty ones are cleaned off as follows:
- a paper napkin is placed on the table;
- The hat is placed on it with the wrong side up (the stain should correspond to the napkin);
- Apply detergent to the stain from the reverse side;
- wait a few minutes;
- replace the napkin with a new one;
- repeat the process;
- then wash the treated area with water (you can also use a wet rag).
Organic contaminants are removed by applying liquid powder to the problem area.. Then wait 10 minutes and wash off with water.
