One of the most popular and universal headwear is the cap.. Or a baseball cap? Is there any difference between them? It turns out that the difference is significant. First of all, they differ in appearance, design features and materials for manufacturing. In general terms, we can note the purpose of both types of clothing - to cover the head from the sun's rays and to protect the eyes from the sun with a visor. This is where the similarities end.
Cap and baseball cap: differences
Both the cap and the baseball cap have an impressive history of origins and modernization. Initially, these were men's hats that were supposed to help in life, work and sports. Today everyone wears them, regardless of gender, age and financial status. First of all, a cap and a baseball cap differ in appearance:
- A baseball cap is a soft headgear with a hard visor and a clasp on the back.
- The cap is also soft, but does not have a fastener and is equipped with a soft visor.
Next, it is worth considering the more subtle differences between these similar, almost related headdresses.
In the history of occurrence
The ancestor of both headwear is considered to be the cap - it first appeared in public in 1830 and was part of the military uniform of French soldiers. Previously, military personnel wore top hats with visors, but these were very bulky and uncomfortable hats. When the top part was shortened, a cap appeared - at first it had a rounded visor, but then it was found that this one quickly gets wet in the rain and does not protect the face well. Gradually, the cap changed and turned into a cap - in the 19th century in England it was very popular among the working class - builders, mechanics, who needed to protect their heads, but a hat was not suitable for this. Over time, the rich began to wear caps.
As the name suggests, the baseball cap was released thanks to the game of the same name. Baseball is incredibly popular in America and during the game you have to spend a lot of time in the open sun. In addition, players need to follow the flight path of a small, and even white, ball, which completely dissolved under the sun’s rays. It was not allowed to wear protective glasses - if the ball hit the face, the glasses could break and injure with fragments. At first, players used any suitable headgear - straw hats, jockey helmets. But in 1954, the New Era company presented the result of its unique development - a baseball cap in the form we are familiar with. It had both a visor and a clasp.
In order not to select the size of a baseball cap for each athlete, an adjustable clasp was invented.
In purpose and modeling
Today the line between a cap and a baseball cap is almost erased. The only thing that can significantly distinguish them is the rigidity and material of the product. Additional, minor, but still differences between these hats will be as follows:
- material of manufacture;
- the presence of a clasp;
- visor;
- shape and number of wedges.
Depending on the varieties of these general points, the following models of caps and baseball caps will be distinguished:
- Classic baseball cap – with 5 wedges connected at the top of the head with a button. This model will have a large, slightly bent visor.
- Rapper - everything is the same as in the classic version, but the visor is smooth, straight and large. It is this type of cap that is now at the peak of popularity.
- Bicycle baseball cap – regardless of the number of gussets (from 2 to 6), this cap will feature a small visor that can be folded up. For a cycling trip, it is important to be able to see what awaits at the top if you are about to enter a mountain.
- Cap with short visor – a universal option for everyday wear.
- Mesh baseball caps – very practical in hot weather.
Any of the listed models can be found in both men's and women's wardrobes. Women's baseball caps and caps can be decorated with additional elements - rhinestones, inscriptions, or have original, bright colors.
In functional features
Conventionally, both hats can be divided into the current time of year for wearing. So, a baseball cap still provides better protection from the sun, but does not provide warmth, while a cap, on the contrary, performs a better warming function. Functionally, these hats can be divided as follows:
- Baseball cap – often intended for sports, active recreation, long periods of driving or being on the beach.
- Cap – is not able to protect from the sun, but it will cope well with light precipitation, will warm you up in the cold season, is suitable for any look and for everyday wear, but not for sports.
When choosing a baseball cap, you can rely on the clasp and adjust the size to suit your needs. You will have to try on the cap before purchasing and look for your size.
