Boater

The straw hat is a time-tested classic. It was worn many centuries ago by residents of equatorial countries, ordinary housewives and secular fashionistas. This headdress is still relevant today, and these days it’s not just a hat that’s in fashion, but many different styles. One of the interesting options is the boater - a model with a fairly rigid crown (top) and narrow brim.

Story

Boater is a French word, translated it means “rower”. This hat appeared at the end of the 19th century, and at the beginning of the 20th century it became especially popular, but initially it was worn exclusively by men.

Much changed when Coco Chanel came into the world of fashion and style, who knew how to influence society’s attitude towards any item of clothing. Boater was no exception. The Great Coco made this hat one of the must-have accessories for her bold, sometimes daring, but elegant looks. Many fashionistas of those times followed her example.

Interestingly, in Russia the boater was also a particularly fashionable item among ladies. So, it was worn by young, as they called “intellectual” girls. They combined such a headdress with a long skirt that was narrow at the waist and widened towards the bottom. The look was completed with a blouse with wide sleeves. The girls who wore such outfits were very fragile, thin at the waist. By the way, they were nicknamed “light bulbs” for the similarity of the silhouette with this electrical device.

Peculiarities

The original version of the boater can be found in those pictures from the past that depicted Venetian rowers. This hat has characteristic features that distinguish it from other hats:

Previously, straw was used exclusively to make boaters. Today, felt and textiles are also used. If a straw headdress is ideal for summer, then textile and felt hats are worn in the off-season, and sometimes in warm winter.

Kinds

The styles of modern boaters are also varied. Thus, the standard option is a model with horizontal fields. This headdress is universal, as both men and women can wear it. The ideal men's look is a boater jacket combined with a plaid shirt, T-shirt and jeans, the bottom edges of which are casually rolled up. For women, this hat goes well with a summer sundress and flat sandals.

A more romantic option is a boater with a rounded brim. This is a classic women's headdress, which is complemented not only with black, but also with multi-colored ribbon (for example, polka dots). A hat like this goes perfectly with a light flowing dress.

A model for more formal looks is a boater with a straight crown. It is believed that such a hat is suitable for men's looks, but in combination with a straight-cut women's dress it looks luxurious.

A rounded crown is a softer and more feminine option. This is again a universal model that can be combined with both a dress and summer trousers. By the way, it is the boater with a rounded crown that is magnificent in the demi-season version made of felt or textiles.

Finally, a completely unusual model - a hat with a crown in the shape of a narrow cylinder. A prerequisite for such a boater is that it must sit freely. A similar hat with a cylindrical crown is good in combination with summer outfits.
