There is a headdress in the modern wardrobe, which we, without thinking at all, call a hat with earflaps. However, it has varieties, one of which is the malakhai - a winter hat with fluffy fur and long ears. Its unusual name goes back to the distant past.
Malachai came to us from the East. It was worn by the inhabitants of Central Asia many centuries ago, but then this hat had a conical shape, and it was worn not only in the winter cold, but was used as a helmet during military operations.
It is logical that malachai appeared in Russia during the invasion of the Mongol-Tatar yoke. This was one of those items of clothing that the Russian people really appreciated: the ears were sewn onto the Tatar malakhai not only on the sides, but also on the back, thanks to which the hat perfectly protected the neck during multi-day snowstorms.
In the 20th century, the so-called “triukha” became popular in Russia - a hat that covered the ears, cheeks and back of the head, and therefore was especially valued among coachmen.
During the Civil War, perhaps, there was not a single man who did not wear malachai. In our country, such a choice was very justified: many in those days survived in the field in terrible frosts, and therefore such a hat was irreplaceable. By the way, at that time there was fur not only on the outside of the hat on the ears, but also on the inside - on the back of the head and the top of the head.
When all the wars of the 20th century died down and the world calmed down a little, malachai with ears fixed on the top of the head came into fashion. At that time, such fur inserts were considered more of a decorative element rather than protection from the cold. This modernized malachai became especially popular in the 70s of the twentieth century.
In addition, in the last century, a hat with fluffy ears became an element of the uniform of pilots, polar explorers, climbers, and forest rangers. It was made from wolf, sable or fox fur, and fox skins were used in the Arctic Circle.
If in the old days the malakhai was considered exclusively a men's headdress, today absolutely everyone wears it - men, women and children. The ears on modern models can be fixed on the top of the head using ties or a button, but they are often decorated with fluffy pom-poms (especially when it comes to women's or children's headdresses).
Malachai is ideal for creating casual looks, as well as everyday ensembles. It can be combined with a sports jacket, down jacket, sheepskin coat or fur coat. This type of hat is especially valued among residents of the northern regions of the country: made from natural materials, it prevents the head from sweating, but at the same time perfectly retains heat and protects from the wind.
In the classic version, the malakhai is a structure of a crown and four fur parts, sequentially sewn together. Two cover the ears, and one covers the back of the head. The last fourth part is sewn to the top of the hat as a kind of flat visor. The crown is also cut in a special way: it consists of four leather or suede wedges. However, these days, different cut options are allowed, and each of them is good in its own way.
Today, malachai are made not only from leather and fur. For its upper part, natural wool is often used, which makes the hat as light as possible, but warm. Also interesting are the options when the malachai is decorated with a variety of oriental ornaments, rhinestones or plastic elements (female models are decorated in this way).
