The entire cap represents a trapezoid, until the moment it is sewn. For a trapezoid, you need to know the circumference of the neck, measure the oval of the face and the depth of the hat. Depth - this will be the indicator from the lobe of one ear to the other (it will need to be divided by 2 and added 5 cm - for the tail of the hat).
Oval face - this size will tell you how many stitches you need to cast on with knitting needles. The neck circumference will tell you where to end the length of the trapezoid. So, we picked up the stitches with knitting needles and first made two rows in stockinette stitch. In the next row, one stitch was added evenly every 2 knit stitches.
Elastic pattern 2x2
First knit the pattern like an elastic band 2*1. Next, add loops to create a 2*2 pattern. After adding, begin only along the edge of the canvas and without interfering with the pattern.Knit a length equal to 1/2 the circumference of the neck and bind off the loops. Separately, make a beautiful tassel for the hat and use a crochet hook to make the ties with simple air loops.
Assembly: Fold the trapezoid in half so that the sides align. The base of the trapezoid will be its longest side. This is the back seam of the hat. Sew the back seam. Sew on the tassel and ties. Try on the product and mark a place on the tail for several stitches so that the hat fits more tightly to the baby’s head.

The cap starts from the bottom. It is necessary to dial the number of loops taking into account the neck circumference. Knit 10 cm and bind off 1/4 stitches according to the face circumference. That is, if you calculate that the circumference of the face is 40 cm, it requires 60 loops. Then we close 25 loops accordingly. We knit further not in circles.
Braid pattern
Make 1/3 of the face circumference according to the fabric pattern and attach an additional set with knitting needles (it is equal to the previously closed loops), then knit again in the round. Decrease in every second row of purl stitches. When only knit stitches remain on the knitting needles, pull them into a circle and secure the thread.
Using circular knitting needles, cast on stitches along the edge of the cutout for the face. Work 10 cm with an elastic band 2*2, in the penultimate row add one loop at a time in the purl loops. Make sure that the elastic pattern is not disturbed. You should get a 2*3 elastic band. Then close the loops according to the fabric pattern. Sew the elastic to the hat using neat stitches.
The pompom is made from leftover yarn. You should get a very large ball. Sew it on and the hat is ready.
