Why Soviet women were forced to wear fur hats indoors

A fur hat is a kind of symbol of a Soviet citizen, which to some extent was almost a cult. Both women and men wore it, but the latter always took off their hats indoors, which could not be said about the fair sex. Girls could wear it everywhere: in the House of Culture, library, theater, at work and even at a party. It seems that there is some kind of secret hidden here... But no, there were reasons for this, and quite logical ones.

Rules of etiquette

At the beginning of the 20th century, a clause appeared that allowed ladies not to take off their hats indoors. But we were talking about a sophisticated and elegant accessory that harmoniously combined with a dress or coat. No one knew then that the new rules of etiquette would smoothly flow into Soviet times, and women in fur coats would walk around the premises in fur headdresses.

It is interesting that of all the points of etiquette rules, women singled out this one. Moreover, some still follow it, forgetting that you still need to take off your hat indoors, unless it’s a small hat.

Reliability and confidence

“I carry everything I have with me.” Owners of fur products were simply afraid that the hat, which then cost a lot of money, would be stolen if left unattended. By the way, there is some meaning here, because in the USSR the crime rate was not low either. That’s why women preferred to carry the headdress with them so that the criminal would not set his sights on her.

Unwashed hair

Even now, we are sometimes too lazy to wash our hair every day, even if there is an urgent need for it. Either there is no water, or there is not enough time, or you are just lazy - this happens to everyone. And Soviet ladies are no exception. Moreover, most women could only wash their bangs every day, which, according to the classics of the genre, peeked out from under their hats. The rest of the head was simply hidden under the headdress and worn constantly throughout the day.

Under a heavy hat, the comb-overs and curls that were fashionable at that time quickly lost volume. And my head was sweating terribly under it. The hairstyle looked, let's say, not very pretty.

A sign of solidity

Fur was never available in the USSR and was always expensive. Usually the most expensive of the entire image was the hat, and therefore, of course, they wanted to demonstrate it, they were proud of it and put it on display.

Investment in the future

At that time, a hat was purchased for more than one season, and sometimes not even two. It was worn for years, carefully cared for and created ideal storage conditions. One of the requirements was a minimum of contact with anything, and therefore it was forbidden to even place the hat on the table, so that the lower part would not become bald.So they wore it constantly, even indoors, so as not to spoil either the uniform or the fur.

ABOUT Olga:

Nonsense.

E Elena:

In the late Soviet period, we had fashion in Donetsk: a mink hat and gold fixations on the teeth. Young people wore mink hats to the disco, and this was considered a sign of coolness. And if the fixings also shone….the image took on a complete look. This was explained by the fact that although the miners earned good money, they did not have refined taste. The rest, who were poorer, did not wear braces and did not wear mink hats.

N Nata:

In museums and theaters, hats were not accepted in the wardrobe
