The Takori hat can safely be called a well-forgotten old one that has returned, because similar models were popular back in the 70s of the last century. The current fashion has brought some changes to the old version.
Previously, such hats had one lapel, but nowadays the bottom is turned up twice. It looks interesting, making the product itself warmer. But at the same time, yarn consumption when knitting also increases.
In order to avoid surprises, you need to master the simple science of calculation and provide yourself with a sufficient amount of thread.
How much yarn do you need for a takori hat?
Due to differences in individual measurements, in order not to buy less or more material than necessary, it is advisable to make some calculations in advance. This is especially true for the takori model, because it is often knitted from mohair yarn, and it is quite expensive and thin, so an extra skein will cost the craftswoman a pretty penny. The most popular pattern for this hat is the English rib, in which the thread consumption is slightly higher due to the use of an element such as a yarn over.
Every needlewoman knows that at the beginning of working on a product, a sample is knitted. This way you can select the required knitting needle size and find out the knitting density. You can also use a sample to calculate the required quality of yarn. To do this, you can use two methods:
- Weigh the finished sample on a kitchen scale and obtain the weight in grams.
- Unravel the knitted element and measure the thread that was used up - you get the length of the thread.
Knowing one of these values, you can easily calculate the required amount of yarn using the information indicated on the skein label.
Label sample
Also, for the calculation, you will need to know the knitting density and individual measurements of the person for whom the headdress is knitted: head circumference (HC) and height (B - the distance from ear to ear through the top of the head divided by 2).
Selection and calculation of the required amount of yarn
The fluffiest and most voluminous will be a hat made of mohair, knitted with English elastic. Of course, you can use any wool, wool blend or artificial yarn to your taste, although the result will be somewhat different.
Advice! In order to make knitting more dense, use a thread folded in half or even 4 times, since mohair yarn itself is quite thin.
So, for example, let’s take the quantities OG = 57 cm And H = 32/2 = 16 cm. Let's say the knitting density in your sample is 10 cm * 10 cm = 11 p. * 13 r., and its weight 8 g. The length of such a headdress due to the double lapel will be at least 40 cm greater than the value of B. Let’s find the areas of the finished hat and sample: Hat = 57*(16+40) = 3192 cm2, Sample = 10*10 = 100 cm2.Using the proportion, we calculate the required weight of yarn (3192 cm2 * 8g) / 100 cm2 = 225.36 g Based on the resulting weight, you need to select the number of skeins.
Some tips
All knitting tricks usually come with experience, but we would like to share some tips to make your creative process easier.
- Programs to calculate the required amount of yarn. These can be found on the Internet, enter the necessary data and get the result you are interested in.
- Larger sample size. For more accurate calculations, knit a larger sample than usual. For example, size 20 cm*20 cm.
- Different shade of the same yarn from different batches. This problem arises mainly when ordering threads from an online store. In this case, you can alternate the threads in each row, which will give you a rather interesting effect.
