Knitted Viking hat: diagram, pattern and step-by-step description

A couple of years ago, the snood, which is popularly called a Viking hat, began to appear in every girl’s wardrobe. Throughout this time, it has not lost its popularity, so there is a great opportunity to feel like a real fashionista and knit a scarf-collar with your own hands. This item not only has a spectacular appearance, but is also incredibly comfortable to wear.

The scarf is presented in the form of a ring, which allows you to twist the snood and vary it according to your personal preference. To create the product, you can use light or denser yarn. You can also wear a scarf at any time of the year, only in spring it acts as a finishing touch to your look, and in winter it serves as reliable protection from the cold.

Ways to wear

A scarf in the form of a collar is a self-sufficient product. The process of its creation is not complicated, since it is based on simple patterns. At the same time, they allow you to achieve incredible results. The most commonly used patterns are:

  • pearl knitting;
  • regular elastic band;
  • chessboard

The resulting model can be safely used for everyday wear. If you need a more formal element, then it is worth making complex patterns, for example, openwork.

There are several ways to wear a collar:

  1. Twist it around your neck. The number of turns depends on the length of the product. When the collar is put on the neck, it is released forward, secured at the back and making a casual drapery. This way you can get an original collar. You can fold the scarf into a figure eight, with one half placed around the neck and the other on the head. This is an excellent option for protection from rain, wind and snow. For decoration you can use a beautiful brooch. Long products look great wrapped around the neck several times.
  2. This option is more suitable for creative ladies. Here you will need two scarves in contrasting shades. One should be put on the head, and the second on the neck. The image turns out stylish and creative.

The collar can be combined with a classic hat. If you use it in the warmer period of the year, then the yarn should be made of thin threads. Then the product can be worn over a blouse or windbreaker while walking on a cool evening.

Materials and tools

To get an original scarf-collar, you need to purchase 250 g of yarn. Denser and thicker threads are suitable to make the finished product look as impressive as possible. But here you need to take into account the time of year:

  • winter – mohair, wool;
  • spring and autumn – acrylic, microfiber;
  • summer - cotton or viscose.

During the knitting process, it is better to use the “braid” technique with 10 loops. The knitting density is not too high: 19 loops in 13 rows will allow you to get a fabric of 10x10 cm.

The knitting needles should be circular and their diameter will be 6.5 mm.

Knitting pattern

This option for creating a scarf-collar should be classified as a classic one, since the scheme is simple and understandable, even for beginners. The procedure is as follows:

  1. Cast on 190 stitches on the needles.
  2. Knit 34 rows using the relief pattern technique. When the 35th row is completed, close all the loops and cut the thread.
  3. Now turn on hook No. 5. Using the crab step technique, add a new thread from the wrong side and knit 1 row.
  4. Finish the row with a connecting post.
  5. Take a few finishing steps and the scarf will be completely ready to wear.

Viking hats look best on girls with a square or round face shape. Visually, the product lengthens the face, so take this into account when creating your look. But older ladies can also use this unique product. It will not only be a wonderful addition to the image, but will warm you up in severe frost and cold. Thus, you can refuse to wear a hat, since a scarf will do this role perfectly.
