During the “invasion” of viruses, not everyone can completely isolate themselves from the outside world. Some people have to go to work, buy groceries, and in one way or another come into contact with others. If pharmacies do not have a single medical mask, you can get out of the situation by making one yourself from available material.
DIY spunbond protective mask
Spunbond - non-woven material that forms the basis of a pharmaceutical medical mask - has many advantages:
- it is sold in any garden store;
- it can be washed;
- It breathes, but does not absorb moisture well.
Necessary "ingredients"
To sew a three-layer face mask, you need to stock up on:
- spunbond;
- a piece of soft wire (you can use the one that connects the headphone wires);
- a pair of rubber bands;
- sewing accessories.
Cutting blanks
First, you need to cut a rectangle from spunbond measuring 22 cm wide and 38 cm high. Then divide it horizontally into 3 parts: 13 cm – top, 13 cm – middle, 12 cm – bottom.Draw dividing lines - this will make it easier to navigate.
Important! If the face is elongated or wide, especially in an adult, it is better to increase the size of the workpiece. For example, make the width 25 cm and the height 41 or even 44 cm (add 1 or 2 cm for each layer).
Sewing process step by step
To “assemble” the mask, you need to:
- Place the wire under the top dividing line. It will help the mask fit more tightly around the bridge of the nose.
- Fold the top to the bottom dividing mark.
- Make a stitch on the machine to secure the wire.
- Fold the third layer with the first two and stitch from the bottom.
- Sew rubber bands on the sides.
- Form a fold approximately in the middle of the mask and secure it along the edges with a zigzag stitch.
- Make two small opposing folds at the bottom so that the mask fits tightly around the chin.
- Insert a cotton-gauze filter into the inner “pocket” (you can see how to make it in article about knitted mask). If you don’t have time for this, you can get by with two or three cotton pads.
That's all, actually. The mask is ready, you can put it on and go, of course, not forgetting about other precautions.
You can change the filters throughout the day, and wash the mask itself as needed. Most viruses die at temperatures above 70˚, so it will not be superfluous to iron it after washing and drying. However, this should be done at the lowest iron temperature and preferably through gauze. Wear it and be healthy!
