Sneakers to save the planet

Design houses that produce shoes in the luxury segment, have been experimenting with creating environmentally friendly products for a long time. Thus, Hermes and Stella McCartney are already developing shoes based on mushrooms.

Chemists and biologists are actively working to study the functional abilities and properties of fabrics made from natural raw materials.

The Gucci brand decided to work in this direction independently. The Italian brand has created an exclusive material called Demetra. Its composition consists of more than 77% raw materials of plant origin:

  • bio-based polyurethane;
  • viscose;
  • wood compounds.

All elements are taken from sustainable sources and are plant based. It took more than two years to develop the matter.

To date, representatives of the Gucci fashion house have filed applications for patents and other official documents proving that this is entirely their development. Papers received will prohibit the use of material by third party companies.

However, in the future, Gucci does not intend to prohibit the use of Demetra by other manufacturers. With their consent, the new material will be able to be used in production by third-party companies.
