Making felt boots is a painstaking process, but not difficult. Of course, no one claims that everything will work out the first time, but what joy will a child have when such felt boots, made before his eyes, are presented to a doll. It is precisely for the sake of this moment that we stock up on endurance and get started.
Which technique is best?
The ultimate goal of the process is to obtain dense felt fabric (felt) from lush and voluminous wool. There are two main felting techniques:
- dry;
- wet.
Dry. The wool is pierced many times with a special needle. This method is not relevant when making decorative felt boots for a doll.
IMPORTANT: this method is used in the manufacture of volumetric products.
Wet. Soap and water are used. It is used to make clothes and shoes of any size, and, therefore, this is the method we will use.
What you will need for work.
- pattern (pattern);
- natural wool, approximately 25 grams;
- air-pimpled oilcloth;
- scissors;
- hot water;
- ruler;
- net;
- detergent.(ideally this is liquid soap, but variations are possible, “Fairy” for example);
- rolling pin (you can do without it).

Step-by-step guide on how to felt felt boots for a doll
Step 1. Prepare a soap solution. Based on a ratio of 1:1.5. Where one part is soap (or detergent) and 1.5 is hot water.
Step 2. Lay out our film on a flat surface, air bubbles down. We place a pattern on it.
NOTE! The dimensions of the product according to our pattern will be about 7 centimeters in height and the same in length.
The pattern that we have attached is made on a piece of checkered paper so that everyone can adjust the size to suit themselves.
IMPORTANT! When making, use a single piece, the finished product will be identical in size, and you can divide it into halves when the felting process is completed.
Step 3. We begin laying out the wool on the pattern. It would be useful if the wool extends a little beyond the pattern, since when drying, different types of wool have an individual shrinkage percentage. We lay one layer lengthwise, the second across, and thus alternate.
IMPORTANT! In the place of the “heel” we place the wool diagonally.
Step 4. Apply the soap solution from a sprayer evenly over the entire coat. Roll out thoroughly with a rolling pin. When rolling, you need to apply pressure.
Step 5. Turn over and repeat the procedure. Thus, we achieve the required thickness, and the degree of density of the canvas is obtained by wetting with a soap solution and rolling out with a rolling pin.
Step 6. After we are satisfied with the density and thickness of the felt, we remove the pattern, which will be wet and can be taken out without damaging our felt boots.Gently shape with your fingers and leave to dry.
After 1–2 days the felt boots are ready. They can be decorated at your discretion.
As you can see, there is nothing complicated in the manufacturing process, and felt boots for a doll will delight not only the child, but also you. Bringing warmth and comfort.
