Women often get upset after visiting a shoe store when the dress boots they like turn out to be wide in the calves. This feeling is especially familiar to those ladies who have large feet and thin shins. But if you know how to solve this problem, then it is absolutely not necessary to deny yourself the purchase you like.
Is it possible to sew boots at home?
If the shoes do not fit, then the simplest thing is to return them to the store within two weeks, in accordance with the federal law “On the Protection of Consumer Rights”. There you will get your money back or exchange a pair for a suitable size.
If the boots are made of suede, then if you wish, you can try to sew in the tops yourself. But it is better to entrust leather ones to a professional craftsman.
Options for sewing boots into the top
Usually, at home, two methods are used, without using a sewing machine:
- Forming a dart with elastic in the boot area.
- Sew the elastic under the lining at the top of the shin.
Important! To avoid damaging your shoes, be careful when taking measurements.
How to reduce boot tops at home
If you have to face such a problem, you need to approach its solution with special responsibility. Only then will the boot fit perfectly on your foot and you will be comfortable walking in such shoes. To do this, a novice craftsman will need the combined skills of a cutter, draftsman, seamstress, and shoemaker. There is confidence in your abilities and there is no fear of ruining expensive shoes - then let’s get to work!
What tools will you need?
To work, you should stock up on the following tools:
- tape measure;
- marker;
- ruler;
- wide thick elastic band;
- stationery knife;
- sewing and manicure scissors;
- thick sewing needle;
- hard thread.
We sew in the boot step by step
Method No. 1: Formation of a dart with elastic in the shaft area:
- Take measurements with a measuring tape from the right and left shins.
- Using the sharp ends of nail scissors, carefully, along the vertical seams, separate the leather strips stitched over the elastic.
- On the underside of the boot, use a marker to make corresponding marks on the rubber insert.
- Mark the dart in the form of an equilateral triangle, connecting its vertices using a ruler.
- To make the seam symmetrical, use sewing scissors to make a vertical cut in the middle of the marked figure.
- Cut excess fabric at an angle to the top of the triangle.
- Sew the dart by hand.
- Apply the middle strip of leather to the seam and trim off the excess on each side.
- Use a sewing needle to hem the resulting triangular flap to the elastic band.
- Treat the two outer strips of leather in the same way, only trim each one from one side.
- Do the same with the second boot.
After all operations are completed, the darts are closed on top with leather. Thus, all the manipulations performed are not visible from the outside, and the emphasized bend of the calf muscles will add beauty and elegance to ladies' legs.
Method No. 2: Sewing elastic under the lining along the entire length of the boot.
- Take measurements with a measuring tape from the right and left legs in the knee area.
- Measure the required length of a thick, wide elastic band in accordance with the measurements (so that it does not overtighten the shin, but at the same time does not slide down).
- Turn the boot top inside out so that the lining is clearly visible.
- Using nail scissors, rip apart the inner material along the seam.
- Insert the prepared elastic band into the hole formed and carefully distribute it over the entire diameter.
- Sew it along the entire length by hand from the inside to the lining.
- Finally, close the seam by hand, bringing both ends of the elastic together tightly.
Attention! This method of narrowing the tops is suitable for high boots without locks. It prevents the accordion-shaped upper from slipping and makes wearing such shoes more comfortable for ladies with thin, slender legs.
Tips for sewing boots with your own hands
In order not to spoil the product, but to bring it into the desired form, listen to the following tips:
- First, decide what things you will wear with these boots (nylon tights or woolen leggings).
- Take all measurements along the top edge with boots on your feet.
- Clearly mark a mark that will serve as a guide for suturing.
- You need to measure and mark marks on both tops, since the volume of the left and right legs, as a rule, differs (sometimes even up to 2 cm).
With this simple knowledge and skills, any woman can make herself a gift with her own hands.Be it expensive dress shoes or your favorite boots from the consumer goods series. You just need to put in a minimum of effort - and you won’t have to choose in the store between a beautiful pair of shoes and how well they match the anatomy of your feet.
