Shoes are an essential part of both men's and women's wardrobes. Only women wear these shoes more often - in a daily look or in the evening. And if you imagine how much time you have to spend in narrow shoes, and even with heels, it’s easy to understand that these shoes should be very comfortable. True, it is impossible to predict comfort in advance, in a store. It also happens that a model fits perfectly with an outfit and you really like it, but you don’t have the right size. In this case, there is an option to purchase a larger size, and then decide what to do if the shoes are too big.
How to reduce shoe size at home
Shoe size is not always measured by foot length alone. The appropriate length may sharply contradict the width of the product. Both the length and width of the shoe can be altered. Often people turn to shoe shops for this, but there are also home methods.
Before you begin, you need to understand that it will not be possible to significantly change the size of the finished product. But you can somehow influence the size of your shoes at home:
- Water.Everyone has probably noticed that after a rainstorm, wet shoes or boots look a little different. For the procedure, just wet the shoes and then let them dry in the open air. If the result is unsatisfactory, you can repeat the procedure. Before using this method, it is important to study the label and tag of the product to see if the material allows water interference.
IMPORTANT: If you need to shrink shoes made of suede or leather, it is better to wet them with a spray bottle.
- A tight elastic sewn inside the heel of the shoe can cause the material to shrink. Armed with a needle, thread and elastic, you need to secure the stretched elastic to the back of the shoe. To make sewing easier, first secure it with pins.
In addition to such radical measures There are also auxiliary toolsthat can solve this problem.
What to do if your shoes are one size too big
It doesn’t matter whether the shoes were purchased a size larger on purpose or became too large after use. There are several remedies that can help restore comfort when wearing shoes:
- Insoles. They can be made of silicone, synthetics, wool or foam rubber. Insoles will not only help keep your feet in big shoes, but will also protect your feet from rubbing and calluses. They will also create a shock-absorbing effect.
- Heel pad. As a rule, such overlays are used to protect the heel from rubbing, but they can also be successfully used in large shoes.
IMPORTANT: Silicone pads cannot be used in shoes whose heels exceed 7 cm - this increases the load on the ankle and increases the risk of injury.
- Finger pads. This invention is just perfect for high heels and will easily help you cope with downsizing your shoes. In addition, the pads have a shock-absorbing effect, which allows you to spend the whole day in heels without suffering.
- Paper, fabric, cotton wool. A slightly outdated, but still effective method - by stuffing one of the above into a sock, you don’t have to be afraid that the shoe will “fly off” your foot.
- Double sided tape. No matter how ridiculous it may sound, it is the tape that helps models “flutter” on the catwalk even in shoes that are 2 sizes larger. The tape securely glues the heel to the shoe. It can only be used if your legs are bare.
Even if you manage to narrow your shoes, it is important to understand that outwardly they may remain the same. Therefore, when walking in such shoes, you should be careful not to trip, especially if there is cotton wool or fabric in the toe of the shoes. It will seem that the toe of the shoe is where the toes are, but this is not the case.
What to do if your shoes are worn out
Another problem is when your favorite comfortable shoes have worn out over time and now you can’t walk in them. “Recipes” for such cases are divided according to the type of material of the product.
Reduce worn out leather shoes
Leather is a material that can be easily corrected, however, on some types of leather there may be stains from water stains, and this is exactly what you will need:
- The procedure requires hot water in a basin and washing powder. A solution suitable for normal hand washing is prepared. The shoes are dipped into this solution for 5 minutes and then dried near a radiator or under the sun.
IMPORTANT: If you keep your shoes in water or over-dry them in a warm place, the result will be negative.
- Another method advises using ice water and a hair dryer.Pour water into a basin, put on shoes and lower your feet into the basin. You need to wait a little - only 2-3 minutes. Then the shoes are dried with a hairdryer or left near the radiator.
Such manipulations will allow the skin to soften and take on the dimensions specified by the leg. After the soaking and drying procedure, you can treat the shoes with a stretching agent. Don’t be afraid of the opposite effect – stretching your already large shoes. These remedies dictate wearing shoes after treatment with several socks, but in our case this is not necessary.
If your suede shoes are too stretched
Suede is a very capricious material in terms of care. But, like skin, it allows the intervention of different temperatures and is capable of changing shape. Please note that such experiments can harm your appearance, but it is worth learning about them. The main way to shrink suede shoes is by alternating temperatures. Heat a pan of water and hold the shoes over the steam, then place them in the freezer.
Still, it is better to use additional devices - insoles, overlays, inserts.
Some tips for choosing shoes
To avoid all these problems and manipulations with your favorite shoes, you need to have the right approach to trying them on and purchasing them. Remember some tips:
- When trying on shoes, stand up and walk around. If the store has soft carpeting, go to a hard surface to maximize the comfort of the shoes under normal conditions.
- When going shopping for shoes, it is better to choose daytime. By evening, the legs swell, get tired and slightly increase in size. An evening purchase will become a big deal in the morning, and if you buy shoes in the morning, your swollen and tired feet will not be able to bear the new clothes in the evening.
- After putting on your shoes, try moving your toes in them.If successful, the shoes fit both in size and width.
- Choose shoes according to the season. If it is summer, let there be more open parts - the nose or heel. In closed models, it is worth looking for “breathable” parts of the product.
If none of the shoe reduction methods work, it is better to seek help from specialists. Shoe workshops will help you “fit” your shoes to size and do it professionally.
