A bolero today is a short jacket (approximately waist-length or slightly higher), usually without fasteners or with one or two buttons. This piece of clothing is quite versatile, and therefore is present in the wardrobe of almost every modern woman.
The birthplace of this jacket is Spain, and men were the first to wear it. The exact date of the appearance of the bolero is still not known for certain, but most historians agree that it happened in the 18th century.
Initially, the bolero was sewn without sleeves; it was considered an element of the national costume of the Spaniards, and linen or wool was used to make it. A little later it became part of the equipment of bullfighters.
The appearance of the name itself also raises many doubts. So, according to one version, it is directly related to the very beautiful Spanish dance of the same name, which was performed by men. Sebastian Cerezo, the author of this creation, used non-standard size music for his performances - ¾, which is why the jacket for performances began to be called “bolero” (its sleeves were also a very unusual length for that time).
According to the second version, the short jacket was worn by ladies who watched the masterly and risky fight of bullfighters with bulls. In this way, women tried to please the fearless warriors. However, the bolero was not particularly popular among beauties of the 18th century.
In the 20th century, a similar jacket began to be used as an addition to a dress, thereby creating a successful imitation of a two-piece suit. This technique was used by many famous European couturiers.
In the modern world, the bolero is a piece of exclusively women's wardrobe. These are clothes for any situation, with which you can create a variety of looks: from romantic or casual to office and even evening.
For example, a bolero looks great with a straight-cut knitted dress. At the same time, it is important to take the choice of colors very seriously: if one part of the image is full of colors, then the second must be monochromatic.
A casual option is a combination of a bolero with jeans and a tight-fitting T-shirt, and a more formal option is a combination of a short jacket, a shirt and a formal pencil skirt.
A more romantic, even carefree look is a combination of a bolero and a dress with a fluffy hem. Heels are a must for this ensemble.
Formal events are also an excellent occasion for bolero. The option made of fur or natural silk or satin looks especially interesting. Such a jacket will highlight the beauty of an evening outfit and will allow you not to freeze if the dress is quite open and it’s cold outside.
A cropped jacket is ideal for women with pear or hourglass figures. It will add volume to the upper body, highlight the décolleté and draw attention away from the hips.
To sew modern models, different materials are used: natural and synthetic. Mixed fabric is also popular.
Sleeves are an important part of such a jacket. They can be up to the wrist, up to the elbow, or very short, barely covering the shoulders. A standard bolero ends at the waistline, but significantly shorter models are also not uncommon.
