Story
The jacket was invented at the beginning of the 20th century in the USA. The idea belongs to the Douglas brothers, owners of their own flying club.
At that time, aircraft designs did not provide for the presence of a roof or glass in the cabin. To protect pilots, as well as spectators of performances from bad weather and wind, the Douglas brothers came up with special warm clothing.
A few years later, the US Department of Defense sent a large order to make the same ones for Air Force pilots.The jackets were intended for pilots of heavy bombers, which is why the name “bomber jacket” was subsequently assigned to them. Later it changed into a shorter one - “bomber”.
Initially, thick horse leather was used to sew products, this provided them with high strength and reliability, but after some time the model changed. Due to the development of technology and the improvement of aircraft, a lighter version of the jacket has appeared. Nylon began to be used for sewing. At the same time, a distinctive detail of the bomber jackets was added - a bright orange lining. It was used by pilots as an identification signal in case of accident and surrender.
Much later, students also liked bombers. Their popularity began at Harvard University: athletes wore them to practice. Such jackets were considered an indicator of success, since only excellent students and athletes could wear them. Wool began to be used to sew jackets, and stripes with the university emblem were used as decoration.
