Fashion loves to come back and go in circles. This is how things that were popular 10–20 years ago appear among trends. Even those clothes whose “spring” passed 50–60 years ago can become relevant. An example of such a case: polka dot dresses. They have returned from a very long oblivion and are trying to become a cult wardrobe item this spring-summer season.
Polka dot dress as a symbol of dude style
Peas, or rather large peas - key style print. It was placed on skirts, shirts, dresses, headbands, on men's shirts and scarves. It could be embodied in classic black and white, red and white, black and yellow, or in some crazy combination. For example, green-pink or red-blue.
The shape of the pattern was in perfect harmony with the decorations and accessories typical of the first Soviet style:
- round beads;
- massive semicircles of bracelets;
- earrings, the front part of which has the shape of a circle;
- ribbons and headbands tied around the head.
As you can see, the shape of each listed typical dude item is associated with a circle. That is why polka dots - a print consisting of circles - were the basis of this fashion trend.
Why is the fashion for a polka dot dress coming back?
In the current spring-summer season, there will again be many girls wearing polka dots on the streets. This is explained by designers are celebrating the 60s and 80s with might and main. And as you know, the 50s and 60s of the last century coincided with the heyday of such a subculture as dudes.
By the way! It was at this time that Minnie Mouse acquired her usual and irreplaceable outfit of black and white polka dots.
Because Do not be mistaken and believe that polka dot dresses are an original Soviet prerogative. The working youth of the USSR, who did not agree with some foundations and provisions, took American and European trends as the basis for their outfits.
In the 80s, the pattern returned again. And among the stars that paved the way for him is Madonna. Her black and white polka dot leggings are considered a cult item.
But for the appearance in the country and the return of dresses with this print, we still need to thank our domestic dudes. It was they who insisted that a girl should be beautiful, bright and infinitely feminine. No factory robes or baggy pants, sewn on an assembly line for the Soviet audience. Only dresses and skirts, fluffy, fitted and emphasizing the chest line.
Features of the dress and its model
Top part it fits and emphasizes the silhouette, and the lower one widens quite sharply from the waistline. The latter is neither too high nor too low, but is intended to emphasize the miniature size of the figure.
The hem is fluffy and holds its shape well. This is explained by the material from which the skirt is made, its shape and connection with the bodice, as well as the presence of a multi-layer petticoat. The last detail can match the color of the dress or, conversely, contrast with it. The presence of frills on the petticoat and the finest embroidery are a plus. In length, it quite often coincides with the skirt, which usually ends at the knee - it covers it, but falls below it only 1-2 fingers.
Important! If you want to show off your legs, feel free to purchase a stylish polka dot dress that is above the knee. Mini is acceptable in this direction. Actually, no one forbids turning to midi. Dresses of this length also look wonderful.
The bodice often comes with a deep, round or U-shaped neckline. The area of shoulders and sleeves may be completely absent; in this case, the bodice is supported by a solid “corset” and a lush chest. If the top is closed, available, then it is represented by thin straps (regular ropes, ribbons of different widths, or narrow at the base and widening straps towards the shoulder) or a short sleeve. Possible length of the part: ¾ or very short (like T-shirts).
What can you combine this dress with?
Put a belt on your waist. It should be wide and stand out against the background of the overall pattern. A game of contrasts is possible and desirable. To match the color of the belt, choose a short string of beads (large beads or small ones are better, but on a thread long enough to wrap around the neck 3 times) and bezel. Select the width of the latter to suit your face shape, but if something happens, remember that dudes did not disdain large headbands. They also loved headbands with bows and just plain ones. For accessories of the first type, the decoration can be either centered or located on the side.
If you put on a set of accessories and see too much, then replace hair or neck jewelry with earrings. Also, the headband can be completely replaced with a repeatedly folded scarf (it should not cover the entire head, only part of it) or with a ribbon. Practice will help you decide among the available options - otherwise you won’t be able to determine which item is right for you and for a particular polka dot dress.
Important! Stylish style requires large plastic and fabric accessories. This rule applies to beads, headbands, bracelets, and earrings.
Look at your feet pointed-toe shoes or open-toe model. The most preferable decorations are a strap around the ankle (Mary Janes fit perfectly into the atmosphere of a stylish look) and a bow on the sock. The heel should be moderately high and stable, not square, but rather something like a glass. If you are looking for an option with a flat sole, then turn to ballet flats.
Important! Mary Janes are in perfect harmony with textile, non-nylon socks. A polka dot dress can also be complemented with short and short socks (if they are too long, lower them a little).
More elements:
- As a top for a cool evening, look for a short, lightweight knitted cardigan that ends at the waist or just below.
- You should try wearing gloves on your hands (not compatible with a cardigan).
- The handbag should be small. Try taking a confetti, a wrist purse, or a rectangular clutch. Carry larger models only in your hands. And remember that shapeless handbags are inappropriate in an image in which each element has strict outlines and boundaries.
