Stockings

The first modern nylon stockings, so subtly emphasizing the beauty of women's legs, appeared in 1939 in the American city of Wilmington, Delaware. They were released by the world famous chemical company Du Pont, which became famous throughout the world for creating unique fabrics and much more. Several months before the stockings appeared on store shelves, the chemical giant's advertisers stirred up the interest of girls from all over the country as much as possible, so when the first batch of products was delivered, they sold out instantly.

The stunned ladies wanted to try on the new clothes so much that they put on the lingerie right in the store. Five million pairs of stockings were sold in one day!

The news about nylon non-tearing stockings spread around the world so quickly that after just a couple of years, every woman had this item of ladies' clothing!

Until now, stockings are one of the sexiest elements of lingerie that excite the imagination of men all over the world.

Modern models are only 81 years old, but their historical predecessors are much older! I would like to tell you some interesting and little-known facts about this wardrobe item:

  1. The first knitted item worn on the leg appeared in the 5th-4th centuries BC in Ancient Greece. Even then, contrary to the opinion of some scientists, women wore stockings. But in the men's wardrobe this item of clothing began to be used only in the Middle Ages. At that time, these products served as trousers and were called shoss.
  2. This element of evening dress returned to ladies only in the middle of the 18th century with the light hand of one of the most famous women of that era, the favorite of King Louis XV - Madame de Pompadour. During the period under review, this product was made of silk, guipure and lace, and its cost was close to the annual salary of a nobleman. It is noteworthy that, unlike modern models, the stockings of that time were just above the knee, but due to the fact that the girls wore long skirts and fluffy dresses, they were not visible.
  3. Men's stockings have always been considered an element of a costume and were worn quite openly, but for women this clothing was part of underwear and it was considered indecent to show it openly. Nevertheless, charming French women, supposedly accidentally getting out of the carriage, lifted their dresses so much that their naked leg in the stocking was visible.
  4. At the beginning of the 20th century, multi-colored versions of this underwear came into fashion. Blue, green and red, they were worn in cabarets, variety shows and brothels. There is information that the legendary spy and notorious dancer Mata Hari performed in colored stockings. Ordinary women preferred models in black, brown or flesh colors.
  5. They began to openly show their legs in stockings only in the 20th year of the 20th century. After the First World War, a period of economic crisis began. Women worked alongside men, to make it easier for them to move, their skirts were made much shorter, and as a result, stockings became noticeable.
  6. The 30s of the last century divided this piece of clothing into everyday and weekend models. The latter, as a rule, were more elegant and sexy, they were decorated with embroidery and lace and were worn only on special occasions.
  7. To prevent the underwear from sliding down the leg, it was worn with a special garter belt, which at that time could hardly be called sexy, but it performed its function well.
  8. Silk stockings were expensive, so they were replaced with a more budget-friendly viscose counterpart.
  9. In 1939, nylon ultra-strong stockings were created, which we have already discussed. "Thin as a spider's web and strong as steel ropes!" - this is how manufacturers spoke about their product. During the year, 64 million pairs of this product were sold in the States.
  10. The era of stockings ended in the 60s, when mass production of tights began. The popularity of short skirts quickly eclipsed the fashion for stockings, so now they are not worn so often.
