Knitting is not just a pleasant craft, but also a wonderful way to update your wardrobe. Bringing a knitted idea to reality, the craftswoman puts a piece of her soul into it. Therefore, things for loved ones are filled with warmth and comfort. And any mom should knit a sweater for her little man at least once in her life. There are a huge number of knitting patterns that even a beginner can knit when picking up knitting needles for the first time. But despite the simplicity of the models, they are able to warm your little one and show him how much you care about him.
Jumper for a boy: how to knit for a beginner
Those for whom this will be their first experience in knitting need to know a few things. Firstly, it is taking measurements to create a pattern. Of course, you can knit according to the description, but this will make it more difficult for you to track the difference between the base size and yours. The pattern will also help you notice in time an error or inaccuracy that has crept into the calculations. To build you will need the following data:
- Chest circumference. The measurement line runs through the middle of the shoulder blades, through the armpits and along the protruding points of the sternum;
- Waist. The circumference of the torso is measured around the waist;
- Hip volume. The measuring tape is located on the most protruding part of the buttocks, passes through the hips and is connected in front into a ring;
- Neck circumference. Measured at the lowest point;
- Length of the product. Measured along the back: from the neck to the place of the expected bottom;
- Wrist circumference.
The next stage is the choice of model and pattern for knitting. For example, the product may have a zipper or a turquoise, blue, or beige color. Your next steps to purchase the required materials and tools will depend on this choice. The choice of yarn will be based on the seasonality of the future item: for cold weather, wool, mohair, merino or alpaca are best. For the warm season - cotton, linen, viscose or silk. A universal option suitable for year-round wear is high-quality acrylic.
Attention! When purchasing yarn, choose knitting needles with a thickness equal to the double folded thread from which you will knit the jumper.
Knitting various children's patterns
Today you can find a huge number of different types of knitted items. They differ in the direction of knitting, in colors, in the method of knitting and in patterns and designs.
The simplest clothes are made in simple garter stitch or stockinette stitch. This look is ideal for a beginning needlewoman. To make the model unusual and memorable, take multi-colored yarn.
The next most difficult thing is knitted with raglan. This is a type of knitting that starts from the neckline, goes in one piece to the chest line and is divided into four parts: the back, the front and two sleeves.A jumper in this way can be made in color, plain or using patterns.
Attention! With the raglan method, the pattern should be symmetrical.
The most complex in terms of technique are complex arans or openwork, as well as diagonal knitting. They require the greatest concentration of attention and a large supply of patience, as this is quite painstaking work. Arana is a technique in which a pattern is achieved by crossing loops to form a convex pattern in the form of strands and braids. Openwork is an airy knitting that is achieved by using yarn overs that form an end-to-end pattern.
Creating a sweater with knitting needles for a boy for different ages
Before you start looking for a model, you should know that they differ in some features depending on age. For example, the knitting and decorating pattern for an infant model will be significantly different from those intended for a 5-year-old model. But despite this, there are a number of identical rules that apply to all children's clothing.:
- When choosing yarn, pay attention to its composition. It is better to purchase a special one designed for knitting children's clothes. Each manufacturer necessarily has a category with this particular characteristic;
- As you know, children tend to get dirty quickly, which means your product will have to go through more than one wash, so choose threads that contain elastane. It gives the material additional strength;
- For children, it is better to purchase yarn with bright, rich colors.
Jumper for a one-year-old child
For many mothers, it is the desire to dress up their beloved baby in something unusual that serves as the main incentive to take up knitting needles. But when starting knitting, you need to familiarize yourself with some of the nuances associated with clothes for babies:
- When choosing patterns, avoid complex arans, as rough weaves can injure the baby’s delicate skin;
- Do not use small particles in the finishing of the product that your fidget can unscrew;
- If the product version needs to be equipped with a clasp, place it in the shoulder area.
It is better to knit jumpers for little ones from variegated, multi-colored yarn and emphasize its unusualness with plain cuffs and an elastic band at the bottom of the product. A traditional ornament or various animal figures look good in this category.
You can also knit the product using the raglan technique (knitting from the neck in the round, dividing a single part into four) or shadow knitting. The shadow technique is a method in which the pattern is made by alternating knit and purl stitches, so that on the front side of a product knitted from a single-color yarn, a pattern is obtained in the form of some kind of figure: a heart, an asterisk, an animal.
Creating a model for ages 2-3 years: step-by-step instructions
For an older child, you can choose a more complex option. In this incarnation, you can fully demonstrate your creativity and ability to experiment. To understand how this process occurs, I propose to look at an example in detail.
To knit the model in the photo you will need to purchase acrylic yarn - 300 g (100m\300g), two pairs of knitting needles: 3.0 and 3.5, six small buttons for fastening.
Create a pattern according to your measurements or, if they have basic parameters, draw them from the given sample. We knit a sample and make calculations of the cast, as well as the required increases and decreases in the fabric.
Important! When making your own pattern, do not forget to add a couple of centimeters to the existing measurements for a loose fit.
The description below corresponds to the calculations based on the sample in the photo.
For the back, take needles No. 3.0 and cast on 61 loops. We knit two centimeters with an elastic band in increments of two (two knits\two purls). Next, go to No. 3.5 and knit with a pearl pattern (alternating one purl/one knit, moving 1 step in every second row) twenty centimeters. We form floodplains. To do this, we close two loops on each side of the part and one loop twice in each second. There are 53 loops in the work. At a height of thirty-two centimeters we form a neckline. To do this, close twenty-one loops in the center. We divide the knitting into two equal halves and finish it separately. We continue with the elastic pattern in steps of two. At a height of thirty-six centimeters, close the remaining loops.
For the front, cast on 61 loops on needles No. 3.0 and knit with an elastic band in increments of two to two centimeters, while adding one loop in the last row. We switch to knitting needles No. 3.5, knit 16 loops with a pearl pattern, 30 loops according to pattern 1 and 16 loops with a pearl pattern. After twenty centimeters we form floodplains, just as we did on the back. Twenty-nine centimeters from the edge of the part, form the neckline as follows:
- Bind off central 12 stitches;
- Cast off two loops in every second row twice and 1 loop three times, alternating with each other.
Next, knit with an elastic band in steps of two. At a height of thirty-four centimeters, close all loops.
For the sleeve, use needles No. 3.0 to cast on thirty-three stitches and knit with an elastic band of two centimeters. In the last row, add three stitches evenly.Switch to knitting needles No. 3.5. Knit nine loops with a pearl pattern, eighteen loops with a pattern two and nine loops with a pearl pattern. In every sixth row, increase one loop on both sides nine times. Roll up the sleeve at a height of twenty-five centimeters. To do this, close off five loops three times on both sides in every second row. At a height of twenty-eight centimeters, bind off the remaining twenty-four loops.
Assemble the product: sew the side seams and sleeve seams, sew the sleeves into the floodplains, while placing the back parts of the trim over the front ones. Tie two parts of the head with two centimeters of elastic in increments of two. Sew three buttons on each shoulder and make holes for the fastener.
How to knit a sweater for a boy 4-5 years old: various models and description of the process
An older child requires more different clothes. This means that a caring mother can show her skills to the fullest extent. After all, the choice of models is so wide that there will be enough options for implementation for a long time. Let's look at what types of jumpers there are for the little fashionista. Classic knitting is a Scandinavian pattern.
This item looks especially good in a contrasting design: a light background and a dark pattern. These clothes are best suited for the cold season.
Also, various arans would be appropriate for a winter wardrobe. These wonderful weaves look best in a solid color. For a summer evening, simple openwork will do just fine.
The knitting order does not differ from the generally accepted one. If you have decided on the model and taken measurements, then after creating a pattern and purchasing suitable yarn, you can safely begin work.

There are many beautiful models that are charming in their handmade nature. Associated with love and containing a piece of maternal warmth, they will protect your child from the cold and dampness of autumn. They will also give him an invisible feeling of your presence.

This intricate thing is not as difficult to implement as it seems at first glance. A spectacular look is achieved through a combination of braids and a braided pattern. The pleasant color of the yarn plays an important role. These clothes are suitable for walks in the park and attending a special event.
This model will serve perfectly in the spring, when the sun deceptively warms the earth and we really want bright colors after the winter cold. The slightly variegated melange and simple design of this item do not prevent it from possessing charm and grace.
In the fall, it would be a good idea to add a neat hat to a wonderful jumper knitted with a raglan pattern. A high elastic collar will protect the boy from cold gusts of wind. Aran weaves and pleasant colors will help it become your favorite clothing.
By keeping your little gentlemen warm, you show how much you love them. So knit or crochet for your health.
