Not everyone can afford to buy exclusive items, but everyone can create an original dress with their own hands. This option is especially relevant in cases where one or several T-shirts are collecting dust in the closet, which have not yet been worn out, but are already tired.
Simply altering a T-shirt into a dress will allow you to create a unique piece of clothing without any financial investment.
What materials and tools will be needed for the remodeling
To sew a unique summer dress, you will need:
- T-shirt, best if it is knitted.
- Fabric to match.
- Sewing machine. If it is not there, you can sew it by hand.
If you plan to sew a bright dress, then it is better to prepare the decor in advance. It can be a ready-made adhesive-based applique, rhinestones, beads or sequins. More complex models involve the use of zippers, buttons and rivets.
How to make different dress models
How many people, so many tastes. From a simple and ordinary T-shirt you can sew dresses of different styles: short or long, with or without sleeves. To create a beautiful outfit, you need to strictly follow the instructions.
Light open sleeveless
A T-shirt is a wardrobe item that always has sleeves. To sew a sleeveless outfit from it, you need to lay the piece out on a flat surface and draw cut lines (it’s best to do this with colored chalk, it can be easily washed). It is important that the T-shirt is long, otherwise the dress will look more like a T-shirt.
Next you need to follow the plan:
- Cut off the excess parts.
- Take bias tape (available in sewing stores) and cover the armholes and neckline with it.
- Sew a bright applique on the front of the product.
Instead of decorating the front of the dress, you can decorate it at the back. To do this, you can take a ready-made bow and sew it between the armholes of the sleeves at the back (where the line of the shoulder blades runs).
Tight-fitting
To turn a wide T-shirt into a fitted dress, you will need:
- Turn inside out and lay out on a flat surface.
- Measure your parameters for the sleeves and hips, mark them on the workpiece and trim off the excess.
- Overlock the cut edges with an overlocker and join the pieces together.
If there is no such device, there are front and rear parts at once.
Open top
Summer is the time to wear strapless outfits. We act according to plan:
- Cut off the bottom of the T-shirt under the sleeves in a straight line.
- Trim excess fabric on the sides.
- Cut 2 rectangles from the cut sleeves, and its width should match the width of the top of the lower part.

Finally, fasten the side seams and sew elastic in the area between the rectangle and the bottom piece.
With elastic band
This outfit will help to collect folds, which perfectly hides figure defects. To sew such a product, you need:
- Turn the T-shirt inside out.
- Draw cut lines based on the measurements of the figure.
- Cut off excess fabric and connect the parts.
- Turn the product inside out and sew an elastic band along the waist line.
To avoid pinching the body anywhere, the length of the elastic should correspond to the waist size.
From a short T-shirt
The only dress that can work is a mini. It can be sewn as follows:
- Cut off the sleeves.
- Cut the “semi-finished product” horizontally just below the chest, making sure that the bra does not peek out from under the finished product.
- Make a hole in the front of the top.
- Make the same hole on the bottom, along the waist line.
- Insert the ends of the fabric into the holes and sew.
This alteration option is possible if the clothes are made of knitwear.
Floor length
To transform a short T-shirt into an evening dress or a long sundress, you can sew fabric to it. To do this you need:
- Measure the width of the piece of fabric you need.
- Sew the material to the workpiece.
- Sew the side of the fabric.
Any fabric is suitable for such alterations: linen, tulle, satin. If desired, you can cut off the sleeves or decorate the front of the product with bright embroidery.
Child dress
It is much easier to sew than an adult one. To do this you need:
- Prepare a “blank” according to the size of the child.
- Choose fabric by color.
- Measure the width and cut the fabric to the same width.
- Sew the material, connect the side parts of the lower part of the product.
You can also sew a children's dress from an adult's clothing using the above patterns.
Important! Children's products should be made from soft fabrics to prevent irritation on the child's delicate skin.
How to wear a T-shirt to make a dress
To quickly get a dress without alterations, you can follow these steps:
- Place a belt at the waist over the T-shirt.
- Instead of a belt, you can assemble the left and right parts and tie the resulting piece of fabric into a knot. To prevent it from coming undone, the fabric can be secured with a brooch.
- Gather the sleeves and secure them with brooches.
