The cold weather is coming. At this time of year, every fashionista is faced with a difficult task - to demonstrate a chic look that fits into the weather conditions. Leg warmers that fit on your arms will help keep you warm and highlight the elegance of any girl.
What are “hand” gaiters called?
Hand gaiters are called mitts. They come in several types:
- solid pipe;
- with thumb hole;
- fingerless gloves.
What are they made from: silk, wool, tweed, guipure, organza, leather, synthetic knitwear, velvet, fur, velor. Made from different materials, they have not lost their elegance and relevance for several years in a row.
A little history...
Hand gaiters were invented back in the Middle Ages for the work of seamstresses, lacemakers and other needlewomen in cold rooms. It was necessary to maintain mobility of the joints and allow the fingers to do delicate work with a needle, knitting needles or bobbins. The mittens successfully completed the mission assigned to them. The hand from the elbow joint and below was warmed by the warmth of wool or dense fabric, maintaining freedom of movement of the fingers.
The fashion of the 18th century elevated mittens to high society. Ladies, dressing up for the ball in open dresses, wore leggings made of thin fabrics or lace on their arms. Bare shoulders were balanced by long mittens, and if there was a short sleeve, then they could be shorter.
This accessory remained in the women's wardrobe until the beginning of the 20th century, and towards its end it returned, first to wedding dresses, and a little later to everyday wear.
What style do they suit?
Mitts are in demand for creating images of many styles:
- sports;
- informal;
- solemn;
- youth;
- everyday.
Mitts are used by cyclists and motorists. Here this accessory is subordinated not to fashion and beauty, but to the convenience of driving a vehicle.
Bikers and rockers can't do without them either. Leather leg warmers in combination with a leather jacket, high lace-up boots, a black bandana, and endless studs complete the creation of a brutal look for their owner.
Thin mittens made of guipure, silk, organza, satin or velvet are often chosen as an addition to a wedding or evening dress. Their length varies depending on the length of the sleeve, reaching a maximum for dresses with bare shoulders.
And, finally, the main reason for their resuscitation is the use of leggings with raincoats, coats and fur coats with short or short sleeves, as well as with fur vests.
However, many girls prefer to wear mitts with a regular length, simply letting them out of the sleeve in small folds until the end of the first phalanx of the fingers. It looks very interesting and adds a touch of casual chic to even the most inexpressive outfit.
What to combine with leg warmers?
Mitts are selected as an accessory. This means that the top priority is clothing, which they must complement successfully. These accessories look ideal with sweaters and knitted dresses with short sleeves. Matched to match or made of the same materials, they work as part of the set, diversify and make it interesting.
For a coat, jacket, fur coat, raincoat with ¾ sleeves, short or long leggings are selected. In the first case, the accessory can be just above the wrist. In the second, it is gathered along the entire length and casually descends to the middle of the palm.
Important! Between the cloak and short mitts is a bare hand. The sleeves of other clothing should not be visible here.
Short leg warmers made of guipure or fine knitwear go well with an airy sundress or light dress. This tandem looks very romantic. An evening look will be spectacular when complementing an elegant dress with long satin or silk mittens.. It is especially interesting if they are embroidered with beads, beads or decorated with rhinestones and sequins.
Important! Gaiters are not worn with rings. This is bad manners.
