How to store winter items: tips for storing seasonal clothes and shoes

In this material we will tell you how to properly store winter outerwear. Often, rejoicing in the spring, housewives quickly put all their warm clothes in special boxes without treating them first. This attitude can play a cruel joke on the owner of the items. In this article, we will look at how to properly store and process sheepskin coats, down jackets and fur coats so that all items survive until the next season. Unfortunately, dry cleaners can't always do a good job, so it makes sense to take the time to prepare your items to preserve your outerwear and save money.

How to store sheepskin coats?

A sheepskin coat, especially if it is a suede sheepskin coat, needs especially delicate care. Before putting away your sheepskin coat, you should shake it in the fresh air. One of the simplest and most effective options is to hang it on a closed loggia for ventilation. In this case, it is worth paying attention to the weather outside the window: it is desirable that it is dry and warm. Ventilation at high humidity can negatively affect the sheepskin coat.If you don’t have enough time for this, you can vacuum the sheepskin coat and reduce the airing time to an hour. The next step is to process the fur using a special brush or roller. If you have a suede shearling coat, it's worth spending even more time cleaning the suede. The fact is that during long-term storage, dust particles destroy fur and leather, so it makes sense to clean the product from dirt as efficiently as possible. Finally, you can put the sheepskin coat in a special case for storing outerwear and, putting moth repellent in the bag, hang it vertically in the closet. The last point is fundamentally important, since it is in this position that the product has access to oxygen and will be at least minimally ventilated. If you do not have a cover for outerwear, you can replace it with thick dark fabric or special vacuum bags.

Even such relatively easy-to-care items of outerwear as down jackets require special preparation. Proper storage will extend the life of your down jacket by several years. This rule applies to both branded down jackets and regular down jackets purchased in stock stores. If your down jacket is filled with natural down, you should take into account that such a delicate filling does not like excess pressure (for example, the pressure of things piled on top of it). Therefore, you need to store a down jacket made of natural down strictly in a vertical position: the ideal solution would be to hang the down jacket in a distant closet on a hanger in a special case.

But before you hang your down jacket in the closet with a clear conscience, you need to clean it by removing all the dust from it by hand. The ideal solution would be to wash (or simply wash) the down jacket by hand. It is best to refuse to wash in a washing machine, even if the label indicates that the product is intended for this. Machine washing can crumple the down inside and ruin the appearance of the down jacket. Before hand washing, turn the down jacket inside out, unfasten the decorative elements, hood and fur elements, and make sure there is nothing in the pockets. It is best to wash a down jacket in cool water using a special liquid detergent. After washing, you need to thoroughly dry the down jacket, shaking it periodically. Before hanging the already washed and dried down jacket in a case in a closet or dressing room, close all pockets and zip up. Just in case, treat the item wrapped in the cover with moth spray (you should not treat the down jacket itself to avoid the risk of stains and streaks).

Fur coats are one of the most capricious parts of outerwear. Few people know that to properly store a fur coat in spring and summer, you need the right temperature: ideally, it should be no higher than 10 degrees. Yes, yes, it is the temperature from 0 to 10 degrees that is considered ideal for long-term storage of natural fur products. Some fur fans are ready to literally rent specialized storage rooms for their treasures in order to extend their service life. However, not everyone can afford such expenses: more economical housewives should simply choose the coolest place in the house and not hang their fur coat next to the radiator.Otherwise, the rules of care are approximately the same as for a sheepskin coat: clean the fur with a special roller or brush, and you need to send the fur coat for spring and summer “vacation” in a special fabric cover (so that the fur can breathe), supplemented with a moth sachet.
