It’s good to have the opportunity, when buying clothes, to try them on for a long time and thoroughly. But it doesn't always work out that way. How not to miss the size, how to understand what it is?
Your own size - how not to make a mistake?
It would seem that there’s nothing complicated about it: having determined the size using the labels of successfully purchased clothes, you just need to remember it and indicate it when placing an order! But the domestic table differs from the European, American, Asian... There is also an international standard! There is only one way out - know exactly your anthropometric data and compare them with size tables. To do this, you need to take measurements - preferably in underwear.
How to take your own measurements correctly?
Let's prepare:
- measuring tape;
- ruler;
- sheet of paper + pen;
- chalk (to measure height).
Advice! Taking measurements yourself may cause errors, and it is better to seek help.
What parameters are needed to determine clothing size?
To start determine height. To do this, stand without shoes with your back to the wall (door frame, closet wall), trying not to slouch.It’s not easy to do without an assistant! A ruler is placed on the head parallel to the floor so that a straight line is formed from the top of the head to the wall. A mark is made along the edge that rests against the wall - from it to the floor the height will be measured.
Now let's measure chest girth – We wrap a measuring tape around the chest along all protruding points. Women should be wearing their most commonly worn bra style! To eliminate measurement errors, it is better to repeat the manipulations. We measure our waist with a centimeter tape, fighting the temptation to flatter ourselves and suck in our belly.
Let's move on to the hips – they are measured at the most protruding points of the buttocks.
Important! Haven't been to the gym in a while? Most likely, the most protruding points will be below the transverse middle of the buttocks, although this is where tailoring reference books recommend looking for them.
We measure limbs:
- arm – extend your straight arm slightly forward and measure the distance from shoulder to wrist;
- leg - measure along the inner surface with a centimeter from the groin to the ankle bone.
Determining the size of women's clothing
We compare the data obtained as a result of the measurement with a table - most often it is present on websites selling clothing, in catalogs and even on labels.
The women's table starts with the designation XS ("very small") and ends with the designation XXL ("very, very large"). Each of the sizes in the table is compared with the domestic one, and for accuracy, the parameters of the chest, waist, hips and height are indicated. Comparing the data of our own anthropometry with the table, we obtain the desired designation. Sometimes you come across the letters L and P, which means clothes for tall people (Long, “long”, above 182 cm) and short ones (Petit, “small”, less than 165 cm).
How to determine men's size?
It is important to understand: Women's S-size (corresponds to domestic 42) and men's size indicated by the same letter (in Russia it is 46) are not the same thing. If you want to give your loved one a gift, you will have to go through the entire measurement procedure with him too! And then in the size table, find the one that corresponds to the data obtained regarding the circumference of the chest, waist and hips. In the case of a shirt, you will also need neck girth!
How to determine the size of children's clothing?
When determining children's size, only three indicators are taken into account - height, chest circumference and age. The sizes for boys and girls are the same. It must be determined based on individual data - children grow at different rates.
Important! Children under two years of age should only be measured lying down - otherwise the accuracy of the measurement will be questionable.
How to find out your jeans size?
There are two main parameters:
- W (Waist) – fullness: determined by waist size;
- L (Lenght) – length: the distance from the place where the legs diverge to their bottom edge.
These two designations appear in size tables, for example, in online stores. Jeans were invented in America, that's why W and L indicators are traditionally measured in inches (one is equal to 2.54 cm). Therefore, the data obtained as a result of measurements must be divided by 2.54 cm, and the result rounded.
Advice! It is better to remove the length of the “inseam” from existing jeans, the length of which suits you.
An example of determining the size of jeans
Let's say the waist is 70 cm. Divide by the length of an inch, we get approximately 27.559. We round to 28, and this is our W. L is obtained in a similar way.Completeness can be determined more simply: knowing your domestic size, subtract 16 from it. The resulting figure is our indicator. However, the more familiar S, M, etc. are becoming increasingly common. In this case, simply compare your data with those indicated in the tables.
