Domovoy is one of the oldest Slavic spirits. It was believed that he lives in every home and protects the family from dark forces, quarrels and troubles. The brownie is portrayed as a cheerful old man-entertainer, which is not surprising.
The spirit is one of the ancestors of the owners of the house. A brownie can both help people and scare them, play pranks, steal small trinkets to punish them for disrespect. Therefore, it is customary to treat the old man and leave him milk and cookies.
Making a brownie with your own hands from nylon tights
Any owner could use some help, and a homemade talisman in the form of a shaggy old man can also help a brownie. The amulet will bring strong relationships and healthy sleep into the house, protect against thieves, fires and floods. If you make your own Kuzya, then you imbue it with your energy. Therefore, it is important to get to work in a good mood and not think about problems; you can call friends and family, gather everyone at home to work.
Preparation of necessary materials and tools
To create a brownie, you don’t need any specific skills, tools or materials; you can find everything at home. There are many techniques: you can remake an old toy, plan a wooden idol, fashion a housewife from salt dough. The plot and details are limited only by the imagination. In MK we will look at a common technique - a soft brownie made from tights.
- Cylindrical base. You can use a piece of pipe, a roll of tape, or another roll of suitable size. You can roll such a cylinder out of thick cardboard. The main thing is that the workpiece has a flat, stable bottom. Height 15–16 cm.
- Nylon tights. Clean and at least partially intact.
- Sintepon.
- Fabric for a suit. The traditional color is red with patterns, black or gray will do. It is better to use natural colors. You will need a piece of rough burlap.
- Harnesses, ropes, woolen threads.
- Plastic spoons.
- Wire.
Useful tools include needles of different thicknesses, threads (beige and in the color of the fabric), wire pliers, a hot glue gun and superglue. For the eyes, you can dig up beads or buttons, but it’s better to fork out for the eyes. A beard can be made from artificial flax, plumber's tow, large paint brushes or just thread. Cones, ribbons, artificial flowers and acorns are useful for decoration.
Technique for making a brownie from tights
1. Sewing the head
The skull will be a piece of the pipe you chose. The head should be half of the toy, that is, 7–8 cm; a tube of adhesive tape is ideal. Pull the tights over the base, you can hem them at the back, if they are too wide, the fabric should be slightly stretched. Sew one end closed.
From padding polyester (or cotton wool) form three identical balls the size of two fingers. These will be the cheeks and nose. We cover the nose with tights - maybe in several layers if the nylon is too thin and shows through - and carefully sew it up. It needs to be glued to the base; a glue gun is ideal.
ATTENTION! When choosing a place for the nose, do not forget that this is the lower part of the face; you should not glue it high or in the middle.
Once the nose is in place, it's time to add the cheeks. We push the balls under the tights; if the fabric is too thin, you can wrap the cheeks in advance with an additional layer. To prevent the balls from fidgeting, attach them to the base with glue.
Add eyes, they are located in the front middle of the head. If your cheeks are too white, you can add blush using acrylic paint.
IMPORTANT! When working with acrylic, be careful that when the paint dries, it cannot be washed off with water. But the brownie will not get his hands dirty if the kids want to play with him.
2. Hands of a brownie
We form the skeleton of the talisman from the second base from tape or a piece of pipe 7–9 cm high. We make notches behind the blank where the arms will begin. Cut a piece of wire 25–35 cm long and secure it in the grooves. You can cut off the excess at your discretion.
We roll two balls the size of a finger from padding polyester and place them on the ends of the wire. These will be the brownie's palms. We cover them with pieces of tights.
ATTENTION! It is advisable not to use glue in your palms, as lumps of it will be felt when palpated.
Now we wrap the wire with padding polyester to create a natural volume and hide the remains of the nylon; you can use simple threads to secure the material. We cover it with the fabric of the brownie's outfit; it is advisable to sew up the seams. Now we form fingers on the palms using beige threads.
3. Making the body
The body itself can only be covered with the fabric of the main suit. For volume, it is better to fold the fabric in half or add another layer of vest. You can add buttons or a collar to make the toy more interesting and realistic.
All that remains is to put on our old man's shoes. From disposable spoons we cut off the oval nose, about half, but it’s better to try it on for your talisman. We cover the spoons with burlap, super glue is indispensable here, hot glue will create extra volume. But hot glue will come in handy to attach the legs to the body.
To prevent the legs from breaking off, you can cut out a base stand from cardboard to which we will attach the toy.
4. Decoration
Now all that remains is to form the beard of your spirit from the selected material. The hair will stick well with hot glue, but it’s better to sew on the thread hair. At this stage, you can add natural materials and everything you have prepared for decoration.
The old man cannot be left without a headdress. We cut out a semicircle from burlap and form a cone; an extra fold will add volume. It’s better to sew on a hat.
Brownies, like pets, have their own character. They can be capricious and jealous, playful and playful, kind and loyal. But a toy made with soul will help establish relationships with any spirit.
