Tights are an integral part of the wardrobe of modern women. They not only provide warmth and comfort to your feet, but are also an accessory that completes your look. The correct choice of type, density, composition and size determines how well and how long the tights will perform their functions.
Let's figure out how to buy tights of the right size.
Tights sizes
When purchasing underwear, we do not have the opportunity to try it on. Therefore, to facilitate the task of selection, manufacturers have developed size tables. For each type of clothing there is its own table. Moreover, each type of tights has its own size chart.
Tights
There are the following types of women's tights:
- compression (medical, for the treatment and prevention of varicose veins or swelling of the legs, for pregnant women, for bedridden patients);
- knitted (poor stretch, made of wool, velor, bamboo, cotton, etc.);
- openwork, mesh (stretch very well, almost dimensionless);
- nylon (stretch easily, made of synthetic materials).
The density of nylon tights is determined by the number of DEN; it can vary from 5 to 180 units. The concept DEN itself refers to the weight of the 9 km long thread used.
How to determine the size of compression tights
Therapeutic compression hosiery is the basis for the treatment of varicose veins. Its essence involves squeezing the lower extremities with strictly calculated force:
- For prevention.
- For the treatment of the initial stage of varicose veins.
- For continuous wear with severe symptoms.
There are also hospital stockings and stockings for operations and childbirth, to reduce the risk of thrombosis. It is worth noting that compression underwear is available not only for women, but also for men.
ATTENTION! To determine the required size of compression tights, you need to consult a specialist. Because only the right underwear according to compression class and size will produce the desired therapeutic effect.
Size chart for women's tights
We can easily buy ordinary, non-therapeutic tights without special consultation. To determine the size of the product, you need to know your height in centimeters and weight in kilograms.
How to measure height correctly:
- Stand barefoot straight, without slouching, with your back to a flat vertical surface (for example, a wall).
- Heels, shoulder blades, and the back of the head should touch the wall.
- Place the box or book on your head parallel to the floor (perpendicular to the wall) and mark its bottom edge with a pencil. It is very important to keep the parallel, otherwise the measurement will be incorrect.
- Using a tape measure or ruler, measure the distance from the floor to the mark.
If this method of measurement seems too complicated and inconvenient (when measuring height yourself), then there is another.It is not so accurate, but quite suitable for choosing stockings.
We take the measuring tape in one hand, the tail with the beginning of the scale in the other. We stretch the tape, straightening our arms in both directions, and fix the tape measure. The resulting value will be approximately equal to the height.
How to measure your weight correctly:
- measurements are taken in the morning immediately after sleep, on an empty stomach;
- barefoot, wearing a minimum of clothing, you need to stand on a bathroom scale;
- remember the result that the scale shows.
You should know that a person’s weight changes throughout the day, but these fluctuations are very insignificant for determining the size of tights.
So, having found out your weight and height, you can safely begin choosing a suitable pair of tights. To do this, you need to use the size chart shown on the back of the packaging of tights from each well-known company. It looks something like this:
To designate sizes, numbers from 1 to 4 are used (for some manufacturers up to 5 and sometimes 6), where the first size is the smallest, increasing to the largest. Or in Latin letters:
- XS (extra small) – the smallest.
- S (small) – small.
- M (medium) – average.
- L (large) – large.
- XL (extra large) – very large.
- XXL (extra-extra large) – the largest.
Finding your height and weight, we look for their intersection. If the resulting point borders on two sizes, you should choose the one that is larger.
ATTENTION! Size charts are compiled for people with a typical figure. Therefore, you should take into account the fullness of the legs, their length and the characteristics of the foot.
Size differences between different manufacturers
When choosing tights, it is worth remembering that each manufacturer develops its own size chart. And although they are very similar to each other, when buying a new brand, it is worth checking the data in the table on the back.
Some manufacturers take the mesh as a basis not on the weight and height of a person, but on the volume of the hips and height.
IMPORTANT! Don't forget that different types of tights can stretch differently. If, for example, you have size S for nylon tights of a certain brand, then there is a chance that for knitted tights from the same manufacturer it will be M.
How to order the right size in an online store
Shopping in online stores has become commonplace for us. It is very convenient to buy goods from the other side of the world without leaving your home.
Shopping for underwear, including tights, is no exception.
Sometimes the question arises: how can you avoid making a mistake with the size when ordering online?
A serious store makes a complete description of the product, so there will definitely be a table of sizes from this manufacturer for the selected line of tights.
Once determined, indicate the required size in the order form. These can be buttons, one of which must be selected, or a pop-up list. If there is neither one nor the other, then you will need to make a note in the message with the order.
But product descriptions are not always comprehensive. If there is no size chart, you will have to look for it on the manufacturer’s website.
IMPORTANT! If you have any doubts about the correct size choice, contact the seller and check with a consultant.
Size chart for children's tights
Tights for children are an indispensable item of clothing. They are worn to kindergarten or school, at home or on the street under pants; autumn, winter and spring. You should be very careful when choosing tights for babies. Here, the quality of the materials used and safety will be more important. But every mother also wants to see her child smart and neat.
Attention! The choice of tights size for children should be taken extremely seriously. A small product will restrict the baby’s movements and wear out quickly. The big thing is to gather into an accordion and slide down. Slipping pantyhose can cause a child to fall frequently.
Like adults, children's tights vary in composition, density, color and size. But unlike women's, the sizing chart for children's tights is based on height, weight and age.
Children grow in different ways, and we should not forget about the peculiarities of the physical development of children. Therefore, the growth rate should be taken into account to a greater extent. Age is more of a hint for those who do not know the height of the child.
How to measure a child correctly
For those who have learned to measure their height, it will not be difficult to measure a child. You just have to know that children under 12 months are measured in a supine position. The measurement is made on a flat surface:
- The child's head should rest against the vertical stand - the beginning of the countdown.
- Stretch the baby's legs with your hands and straighten the whole body using them.
- Place a book or tablet under the heels so that it is perpendicular to the surface on which the child is lying.
- Measure the distance from the origin to the book or tablet.
In children over 1 year of age, height is determined while standing, as in adults.
Size chart for children's tights by age
So, having found out the child’s height, you can start purchasing.
The packaging of tights for children will contain numbers, for example, 86–92. This means that this pair of tights is designed for those who are between 86 and 92 cm tall.
IMPORTANT! Many knitted items shrink after washing, even if washed at 30 degrees. In this case, as a rule, thicker tights shrink more than more elastic ones.Therefore, experienced parents usually buy knitted tights one size larger.
If it was not possible to find out the child’s height, then in stores (including online stores) you can use a table of sizes of children’s tights by age. It looks something like this:
And we remember that manufacturers can adhere to their sizing chart. Therefore, we check the table that applies to the specific selected brand of tights. This is especially true for products manufactured abroad.
Since the comfort of wearing depends not only on the length of the leg, but also on the fullness, some companies have supplemented the size chart with the weight of the child. For example, like this:
In this case, the packaging will indicate “r. 14" or "r. 17”, and on the back there is a size chart that you need to refer to.
Tights that are incorrectly selected in all respects and especially in size will not be able to fulfill their practical and aesthetic functions. Therefore, you should be very careful when choosing your partner or your child’s partner.
