Fashion changes every day, but as long as the world lasts, a girl with an invention and a needle in her hand will always have interesting outfits. People around you won’t guess that a fashionable jumpsuit is yesterday’s dress, which most would get rid of, writing it off as rags.
What is fashionable is not what is massively delivered to all stores, but what is beautiful and suits you, what is unique, exclusive, which no one else has. If your imagination works well, and your hands are constantly itching to create masterpieces, then here’s another idea for you...
Transforming a dress into a jumpsuit
For tailoring, you can take almost any dress, except for a narrow mini. It is unlikely that anything good will come out of such a model. But even if a miracle happens, the result will be something like tights - this is probably not the result that the fashionista expected. The more fabric in the skirt, the more options for realizing your idea. From the flared hem you can make jumpsuits of different styles.
IMPORTANT: Take for alteration only those items whose fabric is in good condition. Shabby, faded material will not work.
It is better to combine the top of your favorite dress with a new bottom if the old one is no longer suitable for use. Satin, satin, silk, linen, knitwear, etc. are perfect for making overalls. Choose the style for which you have enough material.
Options for converting a dress into a jumpsuit
- Afghans are like bloomers with cuffs at the ankle.
- Flares fit on the hips with a free hem.
- Breeches with voluminous hips and tapered bottoms
- Bananas with pleats on the waistband.
- Skirt-shorts.
- Straight shorts.
- Bridges et al.
Required materials and tools
Before you start crafting, prepare everything you need, This will make your work easier and faster:
- The dress itself or sundress.
- Scissors.
- Pins, needles.
- Threads to match the fabric, and contrasting ones for stitching.
- Chalk or dry soap for transferring the pattern.
- Centimeter tape
- Sewing machine (if available).
- Pattern (prepared and transferred to paper to suit your size).
- Decorative elements (according to your desire and taste).
- Iron.
- Accessories (buttons, zipper).
Jumpsuit pattern from a dress
First you need to rip off the bottom part of the dress, and then iron it well. If the overalls are made from fabric that does not stretch, you need to make the legs wider for free movement when wearing. But when sewing from knitwear, if you want to make a tight-fitting outfit, narrower ones.
Constructing a pattern and cutting parts
- To create a pattern, you need to decide on the style. You can borrow ideas from the Internet or a magazine.
- Take measurements (waist, hip, length).
- Prepare large sheets of paper and apply a pattern with your parameters on them.
- Place the prepared fabric on a flat surface, wrong side up. Attach the paper pattern with pins, mark the outline of the cutting line on the material along the edge of the pattern using chalk or soap.
- Make a cut along the marked lines (do not forget to leave 1.5-2 cm for seam allowances, and at the bottom of the legs you must leave 2-4 cm for hems).
- After the pattern is transferred to the fabric, you can cut out the parts.
Sewing overalls from a dress
When all the pattern pieces are cut out, it's time to start stitching. Place the parts of the legs face to face and sew with a contrasting thread, iron well. It's time for the first fitting. If you don’t like everything, you can easily correct it at this stage (adjust the length, width, etc.).
It’s great if you can process all the internal seams of the future outfit with a special overlock machine, or you can do it manually. If you are satisfied with the result, sew the seams using a sewing machine.
The bottom of the legs or shorts is turned up for hemming; here the order of operations is the same: first basting, fitting, ironing and then hemming is done. When the lower part is ready, you can connect it with the upper part, if in your idea the upper part of the outfit remains unchanged.
If you decide to redo the top of the dress, the principle of operation is the same as for the bottom.
ADVICE: For basting, take a contrasting thread, because it is more noticeable and easier to remove when it is no longer needed.
Before sewing on decorative elements, lay the overalls in front of you, lay out all the decorative details on it and only when you are sure what you like, attach them.
Use your imagination, use ready-made ideas and create!
