You shouldn’t be surprised if you meet a dog in clothes on the street: this is not fashion, but proper care for the pet. For many dogs, a jumpsuit is essential when walking. In our country, the weather is cool most of the time, so a dog may need clothes not only in winter, but also in autumn. It will provide warmth and shelter from rain and slush.
You can buy overalls for dogs in a special store, but they are expensive, and in the autumn-winter season the prices increase further. Moreover, the manufacturer does not guarantee a good fit of the item on the pet, because it is made according to standard patterns and for the average dog.
Therefore, sewing clothes with your own hands is a good idea. It is better to make a convenient and comfortable thing yourself, into which the love and care of the owner will be additionally invested.
Recommendations for choosing materials for overalls
The material should be selected based on the season and weather conditions. For the off-season it is better to buy a single-layer and lightweight fabric, which will protect from dirt and rain, but at the same time the dog will feel comfortable and not overheat. Therefore, it must allow air to pass through, be durable, since your pet will walk through bushes and roll in the grass, and be waterproof.
Winter overalls should be as insulated as possible and made of fleece or filled with synthetic padding, this is especially true for small and smooth-haired pets.
If we talk about the composition of the material, then cotton is best among natural ones, and polyester and microfiber among artificial ones. Please note that you need to make a lining that will not rub against the animal's fur and tangle it. For example, you can use satin, silk, viscose or any other fabric with a smooth surface.
ATTENTION! For walks, it is better to choose fabrics that are easy to wash and do not lose color after long use. This way you can increase the service life of the product.
The clasp will play a special role in the overalls. It is better to use buttons for the summer version, Velcro in the off-season and elastic with additional ties in the winter.
How to make a pet jumpsuit yourself
Knit with knitting needles
One of the best ways to make something light and warm at the same time for spring and autumn, when the weather may not be very cold, but not too hot, is to knit. In winter, a knitted overall for a Chihuahua can also be used and worn under warmer clothes.
To get started, you need to take measurements.
The overalls are knitted without sewing together parts or breaking the thread, that is, in a single fabric. For this you will need regular and circular knitting needles and a crochet hook.
Step-by-step instruction:
- Cast on loops on circular knitting needles, the number of which will match the size of the future neck. We make an ordinary elastic band.
- We divide all the loops into several parts for two shelves, shoulders and back.
- Let's start knitting a sleeve. After you reach the armhole, you need to switch to another type of knitting needle.
- Using regular knitting needles, knit only one sleeve, and transfer the other part of the future product to circular ones. Knit the sleeve up to the cuff, gradually decreasing eight stitches, then the cuff itself. We close the last loop, but do not cut the thread, then knitting will continue from this point.
- Turn the product over to the other side and sew it together using a crochet hook.
- We join the left part and the sleeve with knitting needles, reaching the right shelf.
- We knit the next sleeve by analogy with the previous one, at the same time connecting the right front and back. The top part is ready.
- Don't forget to pick up the loops in the armhole.
- We knit everything up to the middle of the overalls at the same time, and do the last rows with an elastic band.
- We knit the shelves and the back one by one. The back needs to be knitted up to the hind legs, then it is better to make raglan again, since the situation is similar to the first part. In the same way, we make another cuff with an elastic band and connect everything together. We make the back straight with an elastic band all the way to the tail, close the loops.
Knitting pattern:
If you want, sew on a zipper or buttons. If you choose, you can come up with additional accessories, for example, patches with inscriptions or cute pendants like on a collar.
Upcycled from an old jacket
Many people have an unnecessary jacket that can serve their pet well. By repurposing an old item, you can sew a great costume for your dog.
For this you will need:
- pattern;
- an unnecessary jacket of the right size;
- sewing machine;
- Velcro fastener;
- threads, pins, scissors.
Stages of work:
- Find a standard pattern for your dog breed that fits the size, transfer it to fabric and cut out the finished parts.
- Finish the edges of the material using a special edging or simply tuck the fabric and secure it with pins.
- Sew the Velcro on a machine, after trying it on your pet to adjust their length and location.
Your product is ready, now your four-legged friend can easily walk in it in bad weather.

How to take measurements
It's actually not as difficult as it might seem. Place the dog on a flat surface and measure all the necessary parameters in order to create a pattern. The main measurements are the length of the back, neck, paws and the circumference of the widest part of the sternum.
Cutting the fabric First, let's draw a pattern. For example, there will be a standard model.
- To begin, take a measurement from the dog's back, from tail to neck, and draw a line on paper.
- A line is laid perpendicular to the finished segment; this is the half-circumference of the chest.
- Point G extends from A, and it will be equal to half the collar.
- E is the half-circumference of the animal's waist.
- DC – measured from tail to hip.
- Measure the semi-girth of the limbs at the top and bottom.
- FF is between the front legs, DD is between the hind legs, and CC is under the tail.
We sew a jumpsuit step by step:
Usually, for those who have done this before, it will not be difficult to sew a cute suit using this pattern. But even a novice seamstress will be able to cope with the task.
Let's get started:
- We make a pattern, place it on the material, and then draw it on the fabric using chalk.
- To make the overalls look better, you need to cut out the top and bottom parts separately.
ATTENTION! Don't forget to leave seam allowances.
- We connect the parts, sweep them together, and then sew them together.
- We process the seams using edging or simply hem them.
- Sew on the chosen fastener, and sew an elastic band in place of the neckline and cuff.
