DIY children's astronaut costume

Most boys dream of being astronauts as children. And even though as you grow older, priorities shift in favor of other professions, yet a boy’s dream can easily be fulfilled, at least for a while. Make your own astronaut costume that will look great at a New Year's party or during a children's performance.

You don’t need to tell anyone what an astronaut looks like: overalls, massive shoes, spacesuit, gloves and air tanks on the back. You and I have to do something similar. The amount of work is large, but there is no need to be scared. If you have the desire, everything will work out. Moreover, you won’t need to spend a lot of money, because all the necessary materials can be found at hand.

We sew an astronaut suit with our own hands

If you have a white or orange jumpsuit in your child’s wardrobe, you can add all kinds of stickers and stripes to it. And if not, it’s easy to sew it yourself.

Materials and tools

Prepare all the necessary materials that will be needed in the process of working on the astronaut suit:

  • shiny fabric and red satin ribbon for overalls;
  • rubber boots, gauze and tape for boots;
  • insulation and tape, a balloon and paper with flour, a 6-liter plastic bottle for a spacesuit (depending on which option you choose);
  • two plastic bottles, foil and gray tape for oxygen cylinders.

If desired, you can decorate the costume with discs and strips of self-adhesive paper.

Top, bottom or one suit

The order of work on the costume is as follows:

1. Trace the contours of the child's sweatpants and windbreaker.

2. Transfer the pattern onto shiny fabric.

3. Mark seam allowances of 2-4 cm.

4. Cut out the pieces.

5. Sew the suit along the seams and overlock the edges.

6. Tighten the elastic bands along the waist and hem of the panties and at the ends of the sleeves.

7. Sew stripes on the legs using red satin ribbon.

8. Use the same ribbon to decorate the sleeves of the suit and the places on the chest where there should be pockets.

It is not necessary to sew a sweater and pants separately. You can make a one-piece jumpsuit. To do this, trace the contours of your son’s overalls, transfer them to the fabric and sew them on the sides. Pull an elastic band around the waist and sew a zipper in front. Instead of stripes, horizontal stripes of red ribbon can be sewn onto the legs and sleeves of the overalls.

Headdress

Preparing the spacesuit will take the most time. It can be made in three ways: from insulation, papier-mâché or a large plastic bottle.

Insulated helmet

Cut from shiny material two squares. Round two corners at each of them. Make two cuts on the sides of the curves, reminiscent of cat ears, in order to give the headdress volume.Make an oval cutout for the face in one of the blanks. Connect both parts using tape or colored electrical tape.

Papier-mâché spacesuit

Inflate a large balloon so that it is larger than the child's head. Cut old newspapers into strips. In a bowl, stir the flour with water until the mixture turns out like thick sour cream. In layers, glue paper strips soaked in the mixture to a ball previously greased with vegetable oil.

Build up as many layers as possible so that the suit does not fall apart prematurely. Let them dry and add new layers. This work will take you several days.

When the suit is well dry, pierce it with a needle and pull out the ball. Cut holes for the face and neck so that your son's head can fit inside. Cover the product with a layer of latex paint. To prevent paint from coming into your hands, open the suit with varnish.

From a plastic bottle

If you don't have time, you can make a spacesuit quickly. To do this, take a 6-liter water bottle. Cut the neck so that the baby's head fits through. Cut out an oval for the face. Cover the spacesuit with foil or gauze using tape.

Oxygen cylinders

No one goes into outer space without oxygen cylinders. Our young explorer of the Universe will also need them. Take two plastic bottles - one- or two-liter (depending on the child’s height). They can be painted with silver from a spray can or covered with foil. Then connect the bottles together with gray tape and attach them to the astronaut’s back.

Space shoes

You will also need special boots for zero gravity.. They are easy to make from old rubber ankle boots. Wrap your shoes in pieces of gauze, bandage or foil, securing them with tape.The layer should be thick so that the boots resemble space ones.

A few evenings spent at work - and your child at the New Year's party will look, to the envy of other children, a real astronaut.
