Pre-test on a small area of furhow it will behave when in contact with water. If the inner layer does not swell or tear, then you can safely paint it.
Important! Faux fur cannot be dyed with hair dye!
Light old fur can be easily dyed red or orange.
Step-by-step instructions on how to sew a squirrel costume
Making squirrel ears
The look of a squirrel would be incomplete without perky ears. We can get them in the following ways:
- By making an “ears” hairstyle from braids.
- By constructing a headband with “ears”.
- Sewing a squirrel’s “eared” hat.
Headband with ears
Required:
- simple headband;
- satin ribbon or bias tape;
- fleece, organza and so on (usually scraps of the main material);
- old shoulder pads or foam rubber;
- matching threads;
- scissors;
- needle;
- PVA glue.
Progress:
- We fix one end of the tape to the rim with glue, gradually wrapping it completely.
- We cut out triangular ears from foam rubber or shoulder pads.
- We cover them with the main fabric. If desired, we make tassels on the ears.
- We sew the ears to the headband and first try on the position of the ears on the child.
- The headdress is ready.
Hat with ears
On such a hat you can also place the details of the squirrel’s face; such a headdress is sewn from scraps of soft fabric.
Required:
- elastic fabric, fleece – 0.25-0.30 meters;
- flaps of natural or artificial fur;
- matching threads;
- scissors;
- needle.

It is convenient to take the details of the faces from the patterns of soft toys:
- We outline the finished child’s hat with chalk and get two parts of the future hat. Seam allowance 0.5 cm.
- We mark the places where the ears are attached.
- We cut out the ears.
- We sew the details of the ears.
- We sew the ears in their places.
- We sew the hat.
- We cut out the details of the muzzle.
- We sew or glue the details of the muzzle to the hat.
- We make a hem at the bottom of the hat.

Skirt for a squirrel
Skirt without sewing
For the simplest skirt we don’t even have to sew anything.
Advice! If you take tulle in several shades of the same color, the skirt will look more natural and airy.
Belt or thick elastic band.
Tulle, organza, chiffon of a suitable squirrel color - 4-5 meters.
Sparkles, sequins, tinsel as desired.
Progress:
- We decide on the length of the skirt.
- We cut the material into strips 15-20 cm wide and a length equal to the length of the skirt multiplied by 2, plus 4-5 cm per knot.
- We tie the ribbons to an elastic band or belt, straightening the knots as carefully as possible so that they are in the middle of the ribbon.
- Fasten the belt or sew the ends of the elastic.
- Let's try it on.
Important! There should be a lot of ribbons, the skirt should resemble a tutu, not see through. In this case, it’s good to complement the squirrel costume with a tulle tail.
Skirt "Tatyanka"
You can sew a skirt for a squirrel costume using the “Tatyanka” type - with an elastic band, a circle skirt, a godet skirt. We will sew a skirt - the sun with an elastic band.
Taking measurements:
We are interested in only two measurements:
- Waist circumference.
- Length of the product.
Construction of a pattern. The skirt panel is a circle with a cut out middle. The length of the inner circumference is equal to the waist circumference with the addition of 2-3 centimeters for a loose fit.
The thickness of the resulting “donut” is the length of our skirt:
- The radius of the first circle is calculated using the formula - HALF waist circumference multiplied by the number “Pi = 3.14”.
- From the resulting circle we set aside the length of our skirt and draw a second circle.
- Cut out the pattern.
- Transfer to fabric.
- We cut it out.
- Sew on a wide elastic band.
- We process the bottom of the skirt with bias tape, fur, and tinsel.

Vest for a squirrel costume
The squirrel vest will suit any version of the costume. We decorate it with fur, beads, sequins, tinsel.
Required:
- Elastic fabric, fleece – 0.5 meters.
- Scraps of natural or faux fur.
- Threads to match.
- Scissors.
- Needle.
We use a child’s T-shirt as a pattern. We outline it with chalk, deepening the armhole and neckline.
Patterns:
- Shelf – 2 parts.
- Back – 1 piece with fold.
Advice! The facings are optional; it’s easier to use ready-made bias binding to match the color of the vest.
Progress:
- We cut out the shelves and the back.
- Sew the shoulder seams.
- Sew the side seams.
- We process the sections with facings or bias tape.
- If desired, we trim the vest with fur.
- Sew buttons, loops, or ties to the front of the vest. The product will look good even without a fastener.
How to make a fluffy tail?
The tail is the main distinguishing feature of the squirrel costume.
It can be fur, fleece, tulle.
As a rule, the tail is made on a frame made of wire (aluminum, steel, or both together), and stuffed with light filler such as padding polyester or holofiber.
So that the tail rises proudly and looks good, one end is attached to a skirt or shorts, and the other is left free. The tail is usually secured like a backpack - with two straps, elastic bands or strips of fur behind the shoulders.
Stages of making a simple squirrel tail:
- We draw and cut out the tail pattern in profile in full size.
- We cut out two parts with allowances from a suitable material. You can make it stitched - for example, an orange tail with a white tip.
- We sew together.
- Turn it inside out.
- We make a wire frame along the contour of the pattern.
- We insert the frame.
- We stuff the resulting tail with filler.
- Sew to the skirt.
- Let's try it on.
