This is a rather unusual attire for New Year's masquerades, but such attire is rare and will certainly make a child stand out from the crowd of snowflakes and princesses.
Who is Kikimora?
This fairy-tale character is often found in Russian fairy tales and is called the Swamp Kikimora or Leshy’s girlfriend.
She lives in a swamp, has an unkempt appearance, her clothes are in rags, her hair is disheveled.
Kikimora carnival costume
The kikimora has coarse green hair and a marsh-colored dress, as if covered in mud or other greenery. You can replace the dress with a skirt with a T-shirt, and throw something like a fishing net on top.
Shoes for kikimoras can only be bast shoes. Accessories will complement the look - these can be large necklaces or bracelets made of beads of different sizes and colors.
Tips on how to make long hair
If you take the easy route, you can simply buy a multi-colored wig for a costume, but the ones that grew up in it are too well-groomed and shiny, they are not quite suitable for the image of a swamp kikimora.
Another point is that it will be uncomfortable for a girl to dance and have fun on the New Year tree with a heavy wig on her head, especially if she has her own long and thick hair.
In this case It’s better to use multi-colored false strands, but you can make them yourself.
Formation of “swamp” strands
For homemade strands you will need flax used in plumbing work. It perfectly imitates Kikimora’s unkempt and disheveled hair; it is painted with green paint or regular green paint. For painting, the flax is divided into pieces and boiled together with the paint. Afterwards, rinse the strands well and dry.
Dried and dyed flax is then formed into strands: long flax fibers are evenly folded in half and attached to the prepared thread with hot glue.
The thread should be completely covered with dyed strands, good and large clips are glued to the edges, which are then attached to the hair closer to the roots. The resulting hairstyle looks very organic and natural and will be an excellent addition to a carnival costume.
Clothing for the look
The swamp diva costume can be either a dress or a T-shirt with a skirt or trousers, with a cape worn on top. The first thing to do is select the material for sewing.
It is best to sew trousers and a T-shirt from thick knitwear: velor, it has excellent stretch, which allows you to make the suit tight and form-fitting, this material also looks beautiful. Mesh is ideal as a fabric for a cape; it can be golden or silver in color. For a suit, a cut of two lengths is enough; it is carefully folded in half and a hole for the head is cut in the middle.
Important! You can make a sloppy edge around the entire perimeter of the cape by cutting the fabric. This creates the effectiveness and extravagance of the costume.
Sew a skirt
Sewing a skirt is not difficult. For the bottom of the suit, light and airy multi-layer fabric is suitable: tulle, organza, satin. For the skirt you will need square pieces of any fabric, which are sewn together at an offset angle. The pieces of fabric are fastened in the middle and a circle is drawn there equal to the waist circumference + 5 cm.
Then the elastic is sewn on. In order for the product to keep its shape well, you can sew a tulle corset down.
Masquerade dress options
To sew a dress, kikimoras take a child’s T-shirt or tank top, carefully trace the outline of the item with chalk, and draw trapezoid-shaped side seams from the armpits, so the baby will be comfortable wearing the dress. Trace the sleeves of the T-shirt and cut out all the details along the intended contour.
A suit skirt looks beautiful when it is multi-tiered, it is sewn in the same way as the bottom for a two-piece suit: square pieces of material are collected and sewn to the yoke.
The top of the suit must be made of knitwear, This fabric is easy to work with and fits perfectly without any adjustments. The skirt can be made from more interesting fabric: tulle, organza with sequins or with an embossed print.
For a fuller bottom, you will need a tulle petticoat.
Pattern of trousers and T-shirt
The pattern for the costume will be based on the child's clothes to ensure accurate sizing.
To do this, you need to take the baby’s sweater and leggings, turn them inside out and put them on the fabric from which the suit will be sewn, outline the items with chalk and cut them out.
After all the details are sewn together, the top of the pants is turned inside out to pull the drawstring into this strip.
Shoe selection
What is Kikimora without bast shoes? These ancient Russian shoes will add a special touch to your costume. You can crochet them yourself using thick green yarn. Ten loops are gradually put on the hook and the bast shoes are knitted in a circle, this is how the sole is made.
After it, they knit three centimeters in height, the final action is knitting the sock and closing it. A 60 cm long ribbon is threaded through the middle of the heel so that it can later be tied around the child’s leg up to the knee.
Important! The bast shoes will ideally match the suit if they are made in green, yellow or marsh colors.
Creative accessories
Accessories will add originality and charm to the kikimora costume. These could be necklaces and green beads, a headband with a frog, a large hat with a brim and a veil, a belt with leaves, threads or New Year's rain - all these details will give the costume a complete look.
Important! Large and layered bracelets and long earrings will look great.
