DIY strawberry costume for girls

Preparing a carnival costume for a child for a matinee in kindergarten or school is quite an exciting and troublesome task, which every parent has done at least once. For some, it’s easier and faster to bring your child for a fitting at a specialized tailoring studio and pick up the finished outfit in a couple of days. Others do it even simpler and rent the dress or suit needed to participate in the performance.

The third option, which most mothers resort to, is preparing a suit on their own, including designing, studying photos with examples, modeling and sewing. Let's find out how to make a strawberry costume for a girl yourself and what you might need for this.

What you need for a strawberry costume

Of course, every adult would like to make an excellent carnival costume for a child without spending a penny on it, however, this will only be possible for those who are professional sewers and have consumables on hand - fabric, threads, needles and various accessories. The rest of the parents will have to go to the sewing store and stock up on everything they need to sew a strawberry costume for the girl.

The exact list of products depends on the model of the chosen suit. If it is created from scratch, you will definitely need fabric; if a ready-made dress (skirt with a jacket) will be used as the main outfit, you need to purchase the necessary accessories and details for decoration that can bring it as close as possible to a ripe and juicy berry. A visit to a stationery store would also be a good idea. It sells thick cardboard and PVA glue, which are used to make masks; the stationery department also sells glitter, which girls love so much; they are used to decorate the outfit and hairstyle of a young actress.

Important! Before purchasing the materials necessary for work, you need to carefully consider the details and style of the future outfit.

It is definitely worth considering that:

  • For children from two to three years old, it is better to choose simple costumes that will not hinder movements and create traumatic situations;
  • children attending the senior group of kindergarten and schoolchildren will be able to feel comfortable in complex, two- or three-piece costumes;
  • When creating a costume for a girl with your own hands, you need to take into account the features of her figure;
  • It is not recommended to use synthetic fabrics and fur for sewing, which can cause allergies in the child;
  • if there are synthetic elements on a dress or suit, it is important not to let them come into contact with the child’s bare skin (you need to wear the suit over thin socks and tights).

How to Create a Simple Strawberry Costume for a Girl

One of the most visual images of strawberries was given to adults and children by the cartoon “Princess Strawberry”. The story about the extraordinary inhabitants of a magical land, Strawberry, Lemon, Blueberry and their friends, is popular with both adults and children. The main character of the cartoon, the kind and smart cafe owner and the best cook in fairyland, Charlotte, is the image that can be used to create a carnival costume.

Making such a costume will not be difficult; you just need to take a good look at Charlotte’s everyday outfit and dress the girl going to the matinee in a similar way. Everyone who sees her will have no doubt that this is the real “Princess Strawberry”. The costume should consist of the following elements:

  1. Headdress. Charlotte is the only one of all her friends who wears a headdress - a pink cap with red specks with a green visor. For a child, you can sew such a cap yourself, try to find a ready-made version, or remake a white summer Panama hat into a headdress of a suitable type. To do this, you will need to paint the fabric with a special dye and then apply dots on it using a red felt-tip pen. The green visor can be made from thick double-sided cardboard and attached to a Panama hat using a stapler.
  2. Sundress. Charlotte wears a light pink sundress with the same pattern as on the cap. You can find the same sundress in any consignment store that sells children's items in the "stock" category.If you don’t find a suitable one, any pink sundress or dress will do.
  3. Tights. The heroines of the cartoon “Princess Strawberry” wear funny tights; Charlotte’s are white with green stripes. The girl can wear regular cotton or nylon tights and draw several horizontal stripes on her legs with a special fabric marker.
  4. Shoes. The final element of the outfit will be pink sandals (shoes, shoes).

An excellent option for a matinee, which can later be used as an outfit for a photo shoot or a walk around the city, would be a strawberry suit, consisting of a green top and a red “tu-tu” tulle skirt. For the top of the suit, you can use any green item. This could be a corset, a top with thin straps, or an ordinary knitted T-shirt with short sleeves, a tight golf shirt with a stand-up collar. The main condition is that the clothes should not have any decorative elements, pockets, designs or patterns. Decorations will be made later when the costume is ready.

A fluffy “tu-tu” skirt can be sewn using:

  • red tulle or chiffon;
  • wide elastic band (from which children's headbands are sewn);
  • thread, needle;
  • scissors, centimeter.

The creation process step by step:

  1. By measuring the circumference of the child’s waist with a centimeter and subtracting two centimeters from it, you get the length of the elastic band that will be needed for work.
  2. The elastic band that will be the skirt's belt is sewn together.
  3. The material prepared for the hem is cut into strips, the width of which is 10-20 cm, and the length is equal to double the length of the product.
  4. The elastic waistband is stretchable for convenience.
  5. The tulle is folded in half and tied around each hole in the elastic belt.The more stripes are applied, the fuller the skirt.

Decor and accessories for a strawberry costume

You can decorate a suit consisting of a green top and a tulle red skirt using golden sequins. The tulle hem is embroidered with a scattering of shiny round pieces, which makes it look more like a ripe berry. You can attach glitter using thread and needle or glue.

The top part of the outfit is a green T-shirt; you can also decorate it with sequins or green beads. Once under the light of electric lamps, the girl - Strawberry will shine brightest of all.

You can put a green hoop on your little princess’s head or tie a green (red) bandage – a solokha. You can also braid two braids or tie two ponytails, decorating them with elastic bands or hairpins with felt (plastic) strawberries.
