Thanks to the distinctive features of national clothing, associations of belonging to a particular nation arise. Costumes from sunny Kuban are no exception.
Prototypes of Kuban Cossack costumes
The final and familiar version of the costume was created over centuries in the process of the formation of the people and its changes. The comfortable and practical suit consisted of elements, many of which were borrowed from other peoples.
The Scythians had wide men's trousers, which allowed riders to sit comfortably in the saddle. They were called “harem pants” and became the most colorful part of the Cossack costume.
The women's outfit borrowed elements and decor from Ukrainian national clothing.
Let's look carefully at the photo to find out what the costumes of the Kuban Cossacks, residents of the Krasnodar Territory, were like.
Men's Kuban Cossack costume
The entire wardrobe was divided into two parts: for everyday wear and military uniform.
Shirt
One of the important elements of the wardrobe is the undershirt, which was sewn from white linen. The distinctive features of the outer shirt were the patterns on the collar.
Beshmet
A special caftan was worn over it - a beshmet of various colors (long or short). Without it, it is also impossible to imagine a full-fledged image of a Cossack. The beshmet was belted with a belt on which the weapon was placed.
Trousers
Depending on the military rank, the appropriate color was used to sew the trousers: blue, red.
Taking into account the weather conditions, a suitable fabric was selected. For summer, a thinner one was used, for cold weather - dense and warm.
A mandatory detail is a strap (gashnik), with which the pants are belted at the waist.
Papakha
A hat was used as a headdress - an important attribute of everyday life.
IMPORTANT! Respect for clothing is an important Cossack principle.
Residents of the Krasnodar Territory considered it unacceptable to carry other people's things, especially from dead or dead people.
Women's Kuban Cossack costume
The main feature of a woman’s wardrobe is a large number of clothing elements that emphasize beauty and uniqueness.
The wealth of colors, jewelry (bracelets, earrings, beads), embroidered bright designs perfectly complemented the image of the Kuban Cossack woman, and the fitted silhouettes emphasized all the advantages of the figure.
REFERENCE. There were restrictions on clothing for a married woman. It was obligatory to wear a scarf and stockings at any time of the year, and one could completely forget about short-sleeved shirts.
Festive
Festive national outfits consisted of a long-sleeved blouse and a skirt, which were decorated with lace and patterns.
The second option was a dress (kubelyok), which in appearance resembled a camisole. Underneath they usually wore a shirt with a stand-up collar.
A good addition were red or black boots with small heels - slippers.
Everyday
In everyday life, preference was given to a simple shirt with a round collar, which was tucked into an underskirt. Both parts were white. On top they put on a skirt of any color and a “hood”.
