For men, the costume included a hat and a Circassian coat. The dominant color was burgundy with gold embroidery on the surface.
In winter, a sleeveless burka-cloak served as outerwear. black, brown or white, which is made from felt.
History of Ossetian costume
Circassian worn by men, made from cloth of many colors: white, brown, black, gray, red. Of particular value was the cloth of goat down in the mountains, and in some settlements camel wool.
As accessory to the Circassian coat was a dagger, located on the right side of the belt, a belt that was decorated with silver, as well as a revolver.
Not unimportant Burka is considered part of the traditional Ossetian costume. The people of Ossetia loved this item very much and could wear it all year round. Such a thing protected the people from snow, rain, cold, and the shepherds used it as a bedding for sleeping.
The fur coat, like the burka, was part of Ossetian fashion. It was worn by Ossetians in the cold season as outerwear.
Features of the national Ossetian costume
At the beginning of the twentieth century, women's costumes were modernized, but folk traditions remained. Now the dress had a straight posture, an apron with various accessories was tied to the hips. A if the dress had narrow sleeves, armlets made of dark red velvet were tied to the girls’ wrists, on top of which gold threads were sewn.
An inseparable part of women's attire was a velvety floor-length skullcap with a round cardboard frame, which was embroidered with gold or silver braid.
Wedding suits
A wedding in Ossetia had a lot of differences from a Russian wedding. In Ossetia, a young bride is required to stand modestly with her eyes lowered to the floor. The beauty is taken into a small room, where she stands in the corner, while the groom drinks with the guests and his friends. It also happened that the groom spent the entire wedding hiding in a neighboring house, and older relatives walked around the entire wedding without the newlyweds.
The bride's outfit is very beautiful, but heavy. It was very difficult to stand like this all day, but many of the girls still agree to take such a step. Ladies wore a caftan from the moment of marriageable age. If the budget allowed, it was made from expensive materials like satin and velvet.
Often the bride's wedding dress was sewn by craftsmen, and used silky fabrics of light colors for this: white, gray, yellow, blue. Over time, some parts of the wedding dress will lose their symbolic significance, but light colors at the wedding remain an integral rule.
An integral part of the outfit was chest fasteners. Nowadays they also play only the role of decoration.
A corset made of leather and several layers of silk was put on the shirt. They tied it with laces made of braid - a narrow strip of fabric. To untie such a knot, the use of sharp objects, such as a dagger, was prohibited.
If the corset was torn or cut, it was a shame for the man. If on the wedding night the groom could not untie the knots, he had no right to touch the young bride.
In the 21st century, brides themselves decide what to choose: a traditional wedding dress or a modern wedding dress. And yet, many young women opt for the traditional option, which has a history of more than a hundred years. And their choice is justified, because a chic dress with the personification of the sun, abundance, and rich life serves as a talisman for them.
Hats
At the beginning of the 19th century, hats in Ossetia were quite diverse both in terms of materials and shape. As a material for men's hats, they chose fabric that was combined with fur and felt. The main type of hats were hats in the form of low caps, which were sewn from several wedges. Others looked like a small round hat. More often they were made in light colors.
Ossetians had a special relationship with headdresses. According to tradition, all full members of the community must wear a headdress, since this item not only protected the people from cold and precipitation, but was also considered a talisman in many communities.
Shoes
Shoes among the residents of Ossetia differed in both material and purpose, but men's shoes differed little from women's. Women used the same things as men.
Like the mountain inhabitants of the North Caucasus, they used rawhide shoes for everyday walking.made by women. And men participated only where physical strength was required, for example, preparing leather for sewing belts. To make high-quality shoes, horse and cattle leather was used as a basis.
There were three types of such shoes:
- First type - shoes with woven soles. These shoes were considered the most comfortable for walking in the mountains. It was worn by mountain shepherds and hunters. These shoes were made from the skins of domestic animals.
- Next come chuvyaki - soft high-heeled shoes. These were made from the skin of cattle, and these shoes were worn by men and women in the cold season.
- And still others looked like dudes. They were called kyoji, men wore them. And it is widespread among the southern inhabitants of Ossetia and several peoples of the North Caucasus.
Residents of Ossetia are proud of their own traditional clothing. Their outfit, despite its bright colors, has a restrained style and cut, because Ossetians do not welcome even the slightest manifestation of vulgarity.
