History of Tatar costumes for the bride and groom

According to old traditions, it was previously customary for the parents to give the cloth for sewing a wedding dress to the future bride. In addition, the girl could choose the piece of fabric she liked from the groom's wedding gifts, which were usually presented a week before the celebration.

The Koran prescribed to have only the most necessary things and to avoid excesses in every possible way. Therefore, clothes that could later be worn in everyday life were often used as festive clothes (loose-cut dresses, tunics and national costumes consisting of a shirt, bib and trousers).

A little later, a camisole (a short, fitted vest) and a beshmet (a quilted caftan with a stand-up collar that fits tightly around the waist) came into fashion. The color palette of festive outfits was not particularly diverse. Tatar wedding dresses were made from green, blue or red fabrics.

Fabrics and decor

Recently, the range of materials has expanded significantly. Now suits for wedding ceremonies are made from thick satin, dupont, brocade and jacquard.

Modern Tatar wedding costumes

Modern wedding dresses often use modernized design ideas that have European roots. Only traditional embroidery remains unchanged. Floral motifs and colorful ornaments made of gold threads decorate the sleeves, hem of the skirt, hijab or veil.

In recent years, a headdress such as a fez has been worn less and less by brides. Instead of a fez, they now usually use a hijab or a fluffy veil. Low-heeled shoes are often chosen as footwear.
