Girls began to prepare a dowry at the age of 6–7 years. Gradually, the chest was filled with everyday and festive dresses, shoes, jewelry, and outfits for her future husband. In total, you can count more than 40 items in supplies.

A little history...

Udmurt womanThe Udmurt people raised their children in the best traditions of hard work. Girls began to be prepared for marriage at the age of 6. If you look at the national costume in detail, you will notice how much attention was paid to the work and the smallest nuances were thought out.

Each house had a loom on which clothes were sewn. Gradually, the girls mastered the device and were able to create truly impressive outfits.

Traditional clothing resembles modern tunics in appearance. The clothing of the northern and southern Udmurts has certain differences, which are manifested in style, fabrics, and colors.Northerners used flax for suits, and southerners used hemp. The traditional outfit was made with elements made of sheep's wool and silk.

What styles are in tradition?

Udmurt women's and men's costumeThe traditional men's style was simple. The casual suit included a shirt, striped trousers and a belt. At first the shirt was white with a little embroidery, but then it was replaced by checkered fabric. The style of the trousers resembled a factory one. Wool was used for winter clothing.

In the cold season, men wore fitted shorts, caftans, and dukes. We warmed ourselves with a sheepskin coat and a wicker belt. When a long journey was planned, they put on a sheepskin coat, which had a large collar.

Features of the formation of differences in women's clothing:

  • belonging to northern or southern peoples;
  • family status;
  • age.

Traditional women's style - a long shirt, reminiscent of a tunic. On top they put on an embroidered bib, robe, belt, and apron. In winter, Udmurt women protected themselves from the cold with a caftan or a sheepskin coat. The festive wedding dress was made in white colors, and bright, rich shades were used for everyday life.

National shoes, hats and jewelry

Udmurt woman and manA woman's marital status could be judged by her headdress. Unmarried girls wore a round or oval hat made of canvas. On top it was decorated with beads and coins. As a girl, you could simply wear a headband or a scarf made of calico or canvas decorated with beads, embroidery, ribbons, sequins. Some girls wore a headband with a huge bow.

Northern married Udmurt women used an embroidered towel as a headdress. In the south, they wore a decorated headband over a towel, bedspread, or aishon.

Important! Festive costumes were processed with beads, coins, and shells, which were used to make jewelry (earrings, necklaces).

In summer, bast shoes were used as men's and women's shoes. The girls wore knitted stockings underneath. Men used onuchi for these purposes. Festive shoes for women were boots, and for men - boots. In winter, everyone wore felt boots.

Modern men's, women's, children's suits

Udmurt ladyNow Udmurts do not use traditional clothing in everyday life. Outfits are worn during holidays, rituals, and ceremonies. But designers are trying to introduce elements of national costumes into modern fashion. So you can see a shirt and a dress, which is decorated with symbolic ornaments, coins. Often, traditional checkered patterns and bright belts are used for outfits, which are made exclusively by hand.

Important! Ethnic fashion gained popularity thanks to theatergoers who independently made national costumes for performances, based on descriptions or museum exhibits.

Light summer dresses, sewn with linen and staple, are popular. They emphasize that the outfit belongs to the Udmurt people and at the same time corresponds to world fashion. Women can safely wear dresses in everyday life. Office and formal style outfits have been designed for both women and men.
