Before sewing a swimsuit, you need to decide on the material. It is important to understand what swimsuit fabric looks like, what the fabric is called and what properties it has. The quality of the chosen fabric determines the comfort, service life and appearance of the product. The material should be elastic, dry quickly and not fade in the sun. The question arises: what fabric do famous brands make swimsuits from? Manufacturers use different fabrics. Often it is this that influences the cost of the finished swimsuit. Let's take a closer look at what fabric swimsuits are made from and how the materials differ.

How to sew a swimsuit with your own hands - what fabric are swimsuits for the beach made from?

Many craftswomen, when choosing which fabric to sew a swimsuit from, give preference to natural material - cotton. But this choice is not always the right one. Often the synthetic version is more reliable and of higher quality. Cotton is not elastic, wrinkles and quickly loses its appearance. Advantages of other fabrics:

  • Polyamide. This is a common material for swimsuits, the name of which is familiar to every seamstress. It is very light and comfortable. Lycra is added to the composition of the products to increase its elasticity and strength. Externally, the swimsuit fabric is shiny and bright. It is often used to make slimming swimsuits. The canvas perfectly corrects the figure, does not lose color under the sun, and is worn for a long time.
  • Polyester. Sewing swimsuits from polyester is an excellent option for those who suffer from allergic reactions to synthetics. But it has its drawbacks. The fabric cannot be called durable, it does not dry quickly and can become electrified. The advantage is resistance to sunlight. At the same time, a swimsuit made of polyester is quite heavy, and the shape becomes deformed over time. Polyester is quite cheap.
  • Microfiber. Modern, high-quality option. It is not difficult to make such a swimsuit with your own hands - the material is easy to work with. It does not stretch, retains its shape, does not wrinkle, and is breathable. The fabric is relatively inexpensive, but will last a long time.
  • Lycra. Everything that swimsuits are made from contains some percentage of lycra. Ideally this is 15-35%. The component is missing only in cotton and woolen items. Lycra increases elasticity and wear resistance. The fabric does not stretch or deform.
  • Biflex. This swimsuit material contains microfiber or elastane, so it has excellent stretch. Gymnastics and sports products for swimming are often sewn from supplex.

What material are swimsuits made from - necessary accessories

Before making a swimsuit, you should select accessories for the product. Plastic or metal structures are chosen for fasteners. The choice depends on the purpose of the product.Basic accessories for a swimsuit:

  • Textile clasp in the form of a loop or hook;
  • Plastic or metal fasteners for straps;
  • Special tape or silicone for making the straps themselves;
  • Elastic bands, ribbons for finishing and edging;
  • Cups for bust of a special shape;
  • Covers for frames in the form of tunnel tapes;
  • Plastic bones for the sides of the product. They fix the bust and are used in swimsuits with removable straps or large cups;
  • Metal frame. Supports the chest. Available in short, standard or long.

How and from what material swimsuits are sewn - sewing the front part of the bra

We sew a swimsuit with our own hands - step-by-step instructions for making a bra:

  1. You should start working with a pattern. Before sewing a one-piece swimsuit or making a two-piece model, let's cut out the cups. Apply the foam blanks with the inside side to the tracing paper.
  2. Smooth out the paper and secure with fasteners. At the points where the fabric is not stretched, we will make darts. Let's cut out a cup from tracing paper.
  3. Draw the darts with chalk or pencil. Similarly, along the contour we will make a pattern for the front sides of the cup. The unstretched fabric will be shaped like a decorative gather.
  4. We get the internal and external pattern of the parts and transfer it to the canvas. Fold the material in half, right side inside. Let's fix it and outline it with chalk.
  5. Add a seam allowance of one centimeter along the top edge on the inner front parts. We don’t make allowances anywhere else.
  6. Let's cut out all the fragments.
  7. Cut out the dart and transfer it to the base. Then we cut out the darts on the main parts, leaving an allowance of half a centimeter.
  8. On the wrong side you need to sew the darts on two fragments of the swimsuit.
  9. The front and back pieces are connected facing each other along the top edges. We fix and sew the parts.
  10. Let's combine the finished fragments with the cups. There will be half a centimeter of riffles on top. We secure the product with a hand stitch.
  11. On the front side we gather the loose material into folds. We make through stitches along the bottom edges.

How to sew a swimsuit - the back of the bra

The front part of the bust is ready, all that remains is to cut out the back fragment. It will hold the cups together, and the clasp will remain in front. Fold the material in half, outer side inward. Let's draw a rectangular figure eight centimeters high. We measure the length according to the volume of the chest. Further algorithm:

  • On one side we leave allowances of one and a half centimeters;
  • On the other side we make an arcuate line;
  • Near the fold, the width of the fragment is outlined - five centimeters. This is the center point of the rear element;
  • Let's cut it out taking into account the allowances;
  • We make a hem along the bottom edge with an elastic band and go through it with a machine. You need to fold the seam allowances into which the elastic is already inserted onto the wrong side. Sew using a flat stitch along the outside;
  • The elastic should be slightly stretched. A purl or zigzag stitch is suitable for this work.

How to sew a swimsuit with your own hands, working with ties and cuts

Now you need to combine the back and front fragments of the bodice. On the elements we will mark the points of joining the parts. Leave an allowance of half a centimeter, and trim the rest with scissors. We sweep the fragments with the right sides inward. To make the bottom cut beautiful, we make an edging. For this:

  • Let's cut out an edging tape three centimeters wide from the material. We calculate the length to be equal to the duration of the bottom line of the cups.
  • From the inside, along the lower edges of the bodice, we sew the braid with a machine, slightly stretching it during the sewing process.
  • Bend the braid to the outside. Fold it along the edges and machine it again. The seam runs a millimeter from the fold line.
  • On the outer part, the ribbon completely covers the previous seam. We will process the upper edges at the back in the same way.
  • We secure the ties with decorative rings.
  • All you have to do is sew on the clasp and the swimsuit is ready!
